御堅勝御安全様の文字までをひねくり回して難しく認めるのは、地獄の沙汰も金次第、金が敵の世の中。されば歌にも「鉦叩き金がないゆえ鉦叩く、金があるなら鉦は叩かじ」。また「それにつけても金の欲しさよ」という下の句は、いずれの歌にも連続すると卑劣千万に覚え、富十郎の鐘入りも、金の供養と

Even loyal retainers who rack their brains trying to strengthen the foundation [of the state] must conform to the columns of the abacus. If there's no immediate prospect of profit without a head start, they're stuck going neither forward nor backward—it's outrageous. Whether advancing six or two steps, the privy becomes the "decision chamber." Overtaken by narrow-minded errand boys, even townsmen with hereditary connections to distinguished houses for generations are treated cheaply when they fall on hard times, while upstarts who were just shop clerks or indentured servants until yesterday or today, if they have money, receive obsequious flattery.
They twist and turn even the characters for "honorable victory" and "honorable safety" into complicated writings—truly, even the judgment of hell depends on money, in this world where money is the enemy. Thus, as the song goes: "The bell-striker strikes the bell because he has no money; if he had money, he wouldn't strike the bell." And the closing verse "Even so, how I long for money" can be attached to any song, which seems utterly base. Even Tomijūrō's bell-ringing performance is a ritual offering to money.
