昔の唐人の寝語（ネゴト）。真実（シンジツ）て呵（シカ）らるゝより。座（ザ）なり

これは古方家に診せなければ、この癇癪は治るまいと、つぶやきながら帰ると見えて、眠らぬ夢は覚めてしまった。

去る申の年、菅原櫛というものを工夫して作り出し、世に流行った時、好事家より狂歌をいただいた。その返歌ならびに序をここに記す。
用いれば鼠の子も軽業を覚え、用いなければ虎の皮の褌も地獄の古着店に吊るされるとは、とっくの昔の唐人の寝言。真実を言って叱られるより、座なりに褒められる方が心地よいのが人情であるから、嘘と追従、軽薄

In the past year of the Monkey, when I devised and created something called the "Sugawara comb" and it became popular in the world, I received a kyōka poem from a person of refined taste. I record here the reply poem along with its preface.
