人参（ニンジン）呑で縊（クビクヽ）る癡漢（タハケ）あれば。河豚汁（フグジル）（ク）喰ふ
て長寿（ナカイキ）する男もあり。一度で父な（テヽ）し子
孕（ハラ）む下女あれば。毎晩（マイバン）夜鷹（ヨタカ）買ふて鼻（ハナ）の
無事なる奴（ヤツコ）あり。大そふなれど嗚呼（アヽ）天歟（テンカ）
命（メイ）歟。又物の流行（ハヤル）と不流行（ハヤラザル）も時の仕合
不仕合歟。又は趣向（シユカウ）の善悪（ヨシアシ）によるならんか

現代語訳

放屁論

人参を飲んで首を吊る愚か者がいれば、河豚汁を食べて長生きする男もいる。一度で父なしの子を妊む下女がいれば、毎晩夜鷹を買って鼻の無事な奴もいる。大層なことだが、ああ天の定めか運命か。また物の流行ると流行らないのも時の幸不幸であろうか。それとも趣向の良し悪しによるのであろうか。

A Treatise on Flatulence

If there are fools who drink ginseng and then hang themselves, there are also men who eat fugu soup and live long lives. If there are maidservants who conceive fatherless children in one encounter, there are also fellows who buy night hawks every evening yet keep their noses unharmed. What grand matters these are! Ah, is it Heaven's will or fate? And whether things become popular or unpopular—is this too a matter of good or bad timing? Or does it depend on whether one's approach is good or bad?
