たゝきやめての看病（かんびやう）貧（まづ）しき中に心をつくせり仲（なか）

つゐにくすり三昧（ざんまい）せぬものなればくすりさへ飲（のめ）ば

釣り場、茶屋、風呂屋、晴れ着屋、巾着屋、裏小路に至るまで、かからない島はなく、随分と昼夜問わず我が家にいない遊び好きの医者である。
ある叩き売りをやめて食いやんでいる貧しい薬缶屋がいた。母一人、子一人、四十歳になっても妻を持たず、至って孝行なことで世間に知られていた。母がすでに老病に及んだので、叩き売りをやめて看病し、貧しい中にも心を尽くしていた。仲間の薬缶屋より投田（医者）を呼んで診てもらったところ、生まれてからついに薬を飲んだことがない者なので、薬さえ飲めば人は命が百歳までもあるものと思って、しがみついて

From fishing spots, teahouses, bathhouses, fancy clothing shops, purse shops, to back alleys - there is no place he doesn't frequent. He is truly a pleasure-seeking doctor who is rarely at home, day or night.
There was a poor pot-mender who had stopped his street vending and was struggling to make ends meet. With only his mother and himself, having reached forty years of age without taking a wife, he was known throughout the community for his extreme filial piety. When his mother fell into illness in her old age, he stopped his street vending to care for her, devoting himself wholeheartedly despite their poverty. When fellow pot-menders called upon Nageta (the doctor) to examine her, since she was someone who had never taken medicine in her entire life, she believed that if only she took medicine, a person's life could last even to a hundred years, and so she clung to this hope...
