料（りやう）をつかはし近月何時に嫁聚（かじゆ）せんと定（さだ）む屋主（やぬし）
此 沙汰（さた）聞て大きに本意（ほい）なきことにおもひて胸（むね）

る方便（てだて）あるまじやと相談しければ医者しばら
くさしうつむき何ごとやらん工夫してやす〳〵
とばらしてのけん金子二十両出せといふいとや
すしと金子を渡しければ医者彼薬種屋の店（たな）
に行てべいさらばさらを買わんといふ薬種屋の

料金を送って、近い月のいつに嫁取りをしようかと決める。屋主はこの話を聞いて大いに不本意なことに思って胸を焦がし、常に懇意にしている医者に話しかけたのは「このようなことである。なんとか薬種屋の婚礼を台無しにする手立てはないだろうか」と相談したところ、医者はしばらくうつむいて何事かを工夫して「やすやすと台無しにしてやろう。金子二十両出せ」という。「とても安い」と金子を渡したところ、医者は彼の薬種屋の店に行って「ベイサラバサラを買おう」という。薬種屋の手代たちが「ございます」といって出したところ、ひたすらいじくり回して見ていたので、手代たちが言ったのは「そもそもこのベイサラバサラと申すものは、いかなる病を治療する薬でございましょうか。近年黒船で初めて渡来したので、親方も買い置きしておりますが、効能を聞き伝えておりません」という。医者が言うには「なるほどそうであろう。この薬種はとても珍しいものである。またこの薬で治療する病気も千人万人の中にあるかないかである」という。手代たちはますます怪しく思って「そのように大切な病気は何と申す病でございましょうか」と言えば「聞き及びたまえ

He sent payment and decided when in the coming months to hold the wedding ceremony. The landlord heard this news and thought it most disagreeable, his heart burning with distress. He spoke to a doctor with whom he was on intimate terms: "This is how things stand. Is there not some means to disrupt the medicine dealer's wedding?" When he consulted thus, the doctor hung his head for a while, devising something, then said, "I'll easily ruin it for you. Give me twenty ryō in gold." "That's very reasonable," he said, handing over the money. The doctor then went to that medicine dealer's shop and said, "I want to buy some bei-sara-ba-sara." The medicine dealer's clerks said, "We have it," and brought it out. As he kept fiddling with it and examining it intently, the clerks said, "What kind of illness does this thing called bei-sara-ba-sara treat? Since it first arrived on the black ships in recent years, our master has stocked it, but we haven't heard tell of its efficacy." The doctor said, "Indeed, that would be so.
