ことはあるべけれども近く見聞したまふことは有
まじ轆轤首（ろくろくび）といふ病なり手代共大きにおどろき
咄（はなし）にては異国（いこく）にろくろくび嶋とやら候よしうけ
たまはり候へども日本にはなきものゝやうに存候
ところに然れば現在（げんざい）当地にも御座候や何れ
の方にあたり候やといへばあまり遠（とを）からず本丁（ほんてう）
筋（すじ）の裏店（うらだな）に牢人（らうにん）の娘（むすめ）なるがきりやうはよけれ
どもいやな病あり聞ば近月に縁組（ゑんぐみ）これあるに
付て何とぞ此病を治する医者やあるとたづね
ける所に拙者一 家（け）一 流（りう）にて此病を治すること数
代 相伝（さうでん）せるを聞出して頃日しきりにたのむゆへ
に此くすりをもとむ然れども此薬に真偽（しんぎ）あり
黒舟に渡（わた）りしは皆 偽物（ぎぶつ）なり真（しん）の物は慶長（けいちやう）年中
に少く渡りたれども今はたへてなし残念（ざんねん）なるは
彼病人治する手がきれたり今見る所は偽物（ぎぶつ）な
れば所用になしとて既（すで）に立んとしければ番頭（ばんとう）
ことの外いぶかしくおもひてなを〳〵其病人の
親（おや）の名は御 存知（ぞんじ）あるべけれども仰聞られまじ

ことはあるかもしれないが、近くで見聞きしたことはないだろう。轆轤首（ろくろくび）という病気である」手代たちは大いに驚き「話では異国にろくろくび島とかがあるそうだと聞いておりますが、日本にはないもののように存じております。ところがそれでは現在当地にもございますか。どちらの方面にございますか」と言えば「あまり遠くない本町筋の裏店に浪人の娘がいるが、器量はよいけれども嫌な病気がある。聞けば近い月に縁組みがあるということで、なんとかこの病気を治療する医者はいないかと尋ねてきたところ、私の一家一流でこの病気を治すことを数代相伝していることを聞き出して、このごろしきりに頼むので、この薬を求めている。しかしながらこの薬には真偽がある。黒船で渡来したものは皆偽物である。真の物は慶長年間に少し渡来したが、今はまったくない。残念なことに、あの病人を治療する手立てが尽きた。今見るところは偽物なので、用に立たない」と言って既に立ち上がろうとしたので、番頭は非常に怪しく思って「なおその病人の親の名前はご存知でしょうが、お聞かせいただけないでしょうか」

"such a thing might exist, but you would not have seen or heard of it nearby. It is an illness called rokuro-kubi (long-neck)." The clerks were greatly astonished and said, "In stories we have heard that there is something called Rokuro-kubi Island in foreign countries, but we believe there is no such thing in Japan. But then, does it actually exist here in our locality? In which direction might it be?" He replied, "Not very far away, in a back shop on Hon-chō street, there is a rōnin's daughter who has good looks but suffers from this unpleasant disease. I hear that she is to be married in the coming months, so they have been searching for a doctor who can cure this illness. When they discovered that my family lineage has been treating this disease through generations of transmission, they have been earnestly requesting my help recently, so I seek this medicine. However, there are genuine and fake versions of this drug. All that came on the black ships are counterfeits. The genuine article arrived in small quantities during the Keichō era, but now there is none at all. What is regrettable is that I have run out of means to treat that patient. What I see now is a counterfeit, so it is of no use." As he was about to leave, the head clerk thought this very suspicious and said, "You must know the name of that patient's parent, but could you not tell us?"
