いへば医者心中にしてくれたりとおもひかなら
ず他言（たごん）は無用 何（なに）の何がしといひすてゝ去ぬ是に
よりて薬種屋の婚礼（こんれい）ばれて媒（なかだち）の者をよびに
やり此 様子（やうす）ありて変改（へんがい）いたすといひやりければ
件（くだん）の牢人（らうにん）大きにげうてんしいかなる様子にて
か程事極り結納（けつなう）まで相済変改は以て離別（りべつ）同
時 身不肖（みふせう）に候へども士（さふらひ）の事に候へば娘（むすめ）も貞列（ていれつ）を
守（まも）り両夫（りやうふ）にまみゆる所存なきものに候へば様子の

This is tantamount to divorce. Though I am unworthy, this concerns a samurai's honor, so my daughter too maintains her chastity and has no intention of being wed to two husbands. I wish to hear the details of the circumstances and have both father and daughter understand the situation." He questioned them severely, so the go-between was perplexed and persistently questioned the medicine shop clerks. Having no choice, they said "Such and such a thing occurred" and told the story in detail. The go-between then told everything in detail to that rōnin, whereupon the rōnin said, "Did you ascertain the doctor's name?" When the go-between replied "I did not inquire about that matter," the rōnin became suspicious and said, "The clerks must certainly have heard and remembered it.
