今日は御返礼に幣物（へいもつ）より屹（きつ）と重き人を遣（つかは）さるべき所也
足下（そこもと）に対（たい）すれば茂斎は民家（みんか）に住（す）む野巫医者（やぶいしや）土（ど）
民（みん）同事のものなれども申ても殿か重（おも）ひ古（いにし）へ宗（そう）
の世宗（せいそう）は米（こめ）を運（はこ）ぶ日用取（ひようとり）に太医院（たい[い]ゐん）の官（くわん）をさづ
け徐華亭（ぢよくわてい）といふ長者（ちやうじや）は貴息（きそく）を以て卑賎（ひせん）の奴僕（ぬぼく）
を拝（はい）させしといふ例（ためし）あり此おもむきつぶさに申上
られよといひければ使者理に伏（ふく）し立帰りて委（い）
細（さい）申上ければ諸臣（しよしん）何（いづ）れもあつまり此義いかゝと評（へう）
じける所に家老（からう）の一人（いちじん）すゝみ出て殿へ申上けるは
茂斎が申所理にあたれりきのふ御家中の諸臣（しよしん）何
れも登城（とじやう）仕手に汗（あせ）にぎり何れもいかゞ〳〵と申
たるばかりにていかにとも手立を存ぜざる所に茂斎か
臨機応変（りんきおうへん）のはたらき抜群（ばつくん）の手から諸家中（しよかちう）の悦（よろこ）
び茂斎一人に皈（き）【＝帰】し候へば諸臣の惣名代（そうめうだい）に拙者（せつしや）罷（まかり）
越（こし）可申と申上ければ尤しかるべしとて家老の
一人（いちじん）行て謝（しや）せしとなり奇（き）なるかな茂斎が向（むか）へて
奪（うば）ふの法 庸医（ようい）のおよぶべき所ならずまことに其 機（き）
量（りやう）丹水子（たんすいし）が右に出たり蓋（けだし）南嶺子（なんれいし）に海帯（あらめ）を煮（に）たる
現代語訳
今日は御返礼として贈り物よりもっと重要な人を遣わすべきところである。足下に対して言えば、茂斎は民家に住む藪医者で、庶民と同じような者であるが、申し上げるが殿がお重んじになるのは古のことで、宋の世宗は米を運ぶ日雇い取りに太医院の官職を授け、徐華亭という長者は貴公子をもって卑賤の奴僕を拝させたという例がある。このことを詳しく申し上げられよ」と言ったところ、使者は理に屈服し、立ち帰って詳細を申し上げた。すると諸臣がいずれも集まり、この件をどうするかと評議したところ、家老の一人が進み出て殿に申し上げたのは、
「茂斎が申すところは理に適っております。昨日、御家中の諸臣はいずれも登城いたし、手に汗を握り、いずれも『いかがなものか』と申すばかりで、どうとも手立てを存じない中、茂斎が臨機応変の働きで抜群の手腕を見せ、諸家中の喜びが茂斎一人に帰したのですから、諸臣の総名代として拙者が参上いたしましょう」と申し上げたところ、「もっともである」として家老の一人が行って謝したということである。奇なるかな、茂斎の「向かって奪う」の方法は、庸医の及ぶところではない。まことにその機量は丹水子を上回った。おそらく南嶺子が海藻を煮た
