疱瘡（はうさう）の神（かみ）を悪口（あくこう）し刃（やいば）を以てあて度（ど）なくきり

の男（おとこ）戸（と）をあけて外（そと）を見ける所に彼（かの）疱瘡病（はうさうやみ）の家（いへ）
より老女（らうぢよ）のさもおそろしきが血（ち）まみれに成て其
家より出て四五軒ならびの家（いへ）にかけ入けりその入
たる家の子其日より疱瘡にかゝれりとなり然れば
疱瘡（はうさう）の神といふものありやあるにして其（その）家内（けない）の者
の目に見へずして向（むか）ひの家の者の目に見へし事
あやしけれと問（とひ）ければ糞得斎こたへていはく
成程疱瘡の神（かみ）あり 世に疫病（やくびやう）の神といふものと一
類（るい）同物（どうぶつ）なり疱瘡の論（ろん） 唐（から）の医書（いしよ）に皆（みな）胎毒（たいどく）と論（ろん）ぜ
り小児（せうに）生（うま）れてより幼（よう）にして此病あるを以て胎（たい）
毒（どく）と論ぜり抑（そも〳〵）疱瘡は上／世（せい）はなき病にして中華（もろこし）
にては唐（とう）の世より始（はじま）れり日本にては天／智（ち）天／武（む）

収斂の頃、ついに死亡してしまった。父親は大いに悲しみもだえて、たちまち怒りが起こり、神棚を散々に打ち壊し、疱瘡の神を悪口雑言で罵り、刃物でめちゃくちゃに切り回り、泣き叫んだ。その翌朝早く、向かいの家の男が戸を開けて外を見たところ、あの疱瘡病の家から老女の恐ろしい姿が血まみれになってその家から出て、四、五軒並びの家に駆け込んだ。その入った家の子は、その日から疱瘡にかかったという。そうであれば、疱瘡の神というものが存在するのだろうか。存在するとして、その家の者の目には見えずに、向かいの家の者の目には見えたということが不思議である」と問うた。
糞得斎が答えて言うには、「なるほど疱瘡の神は存在する。世間で疫病の神というものと同類同種である。疱瘡の理論について、中国の医書では皆胎毒と論じている。小児が生まれてから幼いうちにこの病気があることから胎毒と論じている。そもそも疱瘡は上古の世にはない病気で、中国では唐の時代から始まった。日本では天智・天武帝の頃から異国から伝わってきた。異国でも韃靼にはなくて、中国の人でまだ患ったことのない者が
