得たり笠置（かさぎ）の山上に人ありて是を見しに猿引
猿に瓢（ふくべ）をいだかせて川に流し綱（つな）を引て己（おのれ）は舩中（せんちう）の
傍（かたはら）に屈（かゞみ）居（い）たり物の人をたぶらかす皆此類なり近き
程の事なり塩（しほ）屋の夕煙（ゆうけふり）いと淋（さび）しく寒（さむ）き日に女（おんな）の
子をいだき来（き）て此子を火にあたらせくれといふ塩（しほ）
焼（やき）ゆるしてあたらせたり釜上（ふしやう）より見れば女の子をいだ
きあたらするなり釜下（ふろ）より見れば狐（きつね）の雉（きじ）を毛（け）やき
するなり其まゝおいおとして雉（きじ）を得たり此（こゝ）にして
見るべし幻術者（げんじゆつじや）も妖魅（ようみ）のたぐひも人をまどはす
に厥界（けつかい）ありて厥界の外気のおよばざる所にいたり
ては実形（じつぎやう）の本身あらはるゝなり橋本（はしもと）にて猿引（さるひき）が笠置（かさぎ）
の山上より見るを知（し）らず狐（きつね）の釜下よりのぞくを知ら
ざるは皆 妖気（ようき）のいたらざるなり雷（らい）に異形（いぎやう）の者のさぞ
はれて霹靂（へきれき）するとき雲気（うんき）の絶間（たへま）にたちまちお
つるがごとし狐狸（きつねたぬき）の人を狂惑（きやうわく）するに能（よく）人語（にんご）をなすと
いへども更（さら）に狐狸はこんともすんともいかねどもまど
はさるゝ人の耳中（にちう）に聞ゆるはまどはされし心より
我（わが）耳中に躁（さわが）しきは耳鳴（にめい）の他人の耳（みゝ）に聞へざるが
現代語訳
成功した。笠置の山上に人がいてこれを見ると、猿回しは猿に瓢箪を抱かせて川に流し、綱を引いて自分は船中の傍らにかがんでいた。物の怪が人を騙すのは皆この類である。
近頃のことである。塩屋の夕煙がとても寂しく、寒い日に女が子供を抱いて来て「この子を火にあたらせてください」と言った。塩焼きは許可してあたらせた。釜の上から見れば女が子を抱いて火にあたらせているのである。釜の下から見れば狐が雉の毛を焼いているのである。そのまま追い払って雉を得た。ここで分かることがある。幻術者も妖魅の類も人を惑わすのに
その境界があって、その境界の外で気の及ばない所に至ると、実際の形の本来の姿が現れるのである。橋本で猿回しが笠置の山上から見られているのを知らず、狐が釜の下から覗かれているのを知らないのは、皆妖気が届かないからである。雷に異形の者が騒いで霹靂するとき、雲気の切れ間にたちまち落ちるようなものである。狐狸が人を狂わせ惑わすのによく人語を話すと言うけれども、さらに狐狸は何とも言わないけれども、惑わされる人の耳中に聞こえるのは、惑わされた心から生じるものである。自分の耳中に騒がしいのは耳鳴りが他人の耳には聞こえないのと同じである。

Although it's said that foxes and raccoon dogs can speak human language when driving people mad, the foxes and raccoon dogs don't actually say anything at all. What the bewitched person hears in their ears comes from their own deluded mind. The noise in one's own ears is like tinnitus that others cannot hear.
