節安又問ていはく 不学（ふがく）の医者（いじや）は得てはやりがつ

丹水子（たんすいし）に論ぜり丹水子のいへるは不学の医は常に
十人を殺（ころ）せども僥倖（まぐれ）あたりのさいはいありて高（かう）□
の名あるひとを一人治すれば それよりして鳴出（なりいで）て
はやりが付（つく）学医は常に十人を治すれども不仕合（ふしあわせ）
にて高名の人を不治（ぢせざる）ことあり是よりして名を

この幻術者の裸身は標（病気の症状）であり、衣服は本（病気の根本）である。師匠は標本を理解していたが、弟子は知らなかった。今の医者は標本を見分けることは稀であり、多くは裸身を狙うばかりである。
医者の流行る・流行らないについての談義
節安がまた問うて言うには「不学の医者は得てして流行りがつくものですが、学のある医者が流行らないのはいかがなものでしょうか」。答えて言うには「この事はすでに丹水子が論じている。丹水子の言うには、不学の医者は普段十人を殺しても、偶然当たりの幸いがあって高位の名のある人を一人治せば、それより名声が出て流行りがつく。学のある医者は普段十人を治しても、不幸にして高名の人を治せないことがあり、これより名を落として流行らないという」。これは一面的な見方である。医者が流行る流行らないは天の定めである。医者を行う者でどちらが流行りを好まない者があろうか。いや、ない。衒学的で追従し、馬鹿丁寧で小田原の透頂香売り程度にしゃべる医者は、人は多くは嫌うものである。あるいは無口で律儀正当で言葉少ない者は愛想がなくて人前では疎遠になるものである。あるいは流行らせようと貪欲にあがき回り、仕回り物店の古い薬箱を安く買って式台に並べ置き

This illusionist's naked body represents the manifestation (symptoms of illness), while his clothes represent the root (the fundamental cause of illness). The master understood root and manifestation, but the disciples did not. Today's doctors rarely distinguish between root and manifestation; most only aim at the naked body.
A Discussion on Whether Doctors Become Popular or Not
Setsu'an asked again, saying, "Unlearned doctors tend to become popular, but why do learned doctors not become popular?" The answer was: "This matter has already been discussed by Tansuishi. Tansuishi said that although unlearned doctors normally kill ten people, if they have the good fortune of a lucky hit and cure one person of high rank and fame, their reputation spreads from that point and they become popular. Learned doctors normally cure ten people, but if they are unfortunate and fail to cure a famous person, their reputation falls and they do not become popular." This is a one-sided view. Whether a doctor becomes popular or not is determined by Heaven. Among those who practice medicine, which one does not desire popularity? None. Doctors who are ostentatious, fawning, foolishly obsequious, and chatter as much as Odawara medicine peddlers are generally disliked by people. Some who are taciturn, honest and proper, and speak little lack charm and become distant in company. Others, desperately scrambling to become popular, buy old medicine boxes cheaply from secondhand shops and arrange them on their entrance platforms,
