いで山姥に祈誓（きせい）申さんと件（くだん）の田面（たのも）にはこび偈仰（かつがう）
しけりそれより疱瘡子（いもこ）目病（めやみ）耳聾（みゝつぶれ）腰引（こしひき）膝行（いざり）迄
匍（はい）きたりて山姥に祈願（きぐはん）しけり近郷（きんがう）は勿論（もちろん）遠村（ゑんそん）其
処（ところ）の家中／老若男女（らうにやくなんによ）貴賤（きせん）上下／駕籠（かご）乗物（のりもの）つどい
来りて社（やしろ）を立（たて）鳥井（とりい）を立（たて）山姥堂（やまうばだう）と名付て昼夜（ちうや）
の群集（くんしう）引もきらずその近郷（きんこう）隣国（りんごく）まで詣（まふで）きたり
ければ太守（たいしゆ）きゝたまひていかなることを起（おこ）りぞ由来（ゆらい）
をたづねさせられければ彼山姥といひしは其所の
家中の若黨傍輩（わかとうはうだい）の女と密通（みつつう）し胎（はらみ）て隠（かく）しがた
ければ女のしるべのもの越路にありけりそれをた
のみて二人（ふたり）連（づれ）にて此所まで来りけるに しきりに催（はら）
気（け）付て件（くだん）の田面（たのも）にて産落（うみおと）しすなはち赤子（あかご）を津（つ）
幡（ばた）門といふに投（なげ）すて夫婦（ふうふ）は越路のしるべのものを尋
行しに親兄弟（おやきやうだい）といふにもあらず女か幼（おさな）ともだちなり
けるをたにおみにおもふて行けるに女のはかなきは其村
にて子を産（うみ）し難儀（なんぎ）其子を川へ流（なか）せしといふより
友立（ともだち）うとみにくみて越路にもたゝずみがたく上方（かみがたへ）
逃（にげ）のぼりし所に上方（かみかた）の関所（せきしよ）にて女を通（とを）さゞりけ
現代語訳
「それでは山姥に祈誓申し上げよう」と、例の田んぼに運んで担ぎ上げた。それから疱瘡の子、目の病気の者、耳の聞こえない者、腰の曲がった者、膝で歩く者まで這って来て山姥に祈願した。近郷はもちろん遠い村からも、その土地の武家の老若男女、身分の高い者も低い者も、駕籠や乗り物で集まって来て、社を建て鳥居を建て「山姥堂」と名付けて、昼夜の群衆が引きも切らず、その近郷や隣国まで参詣に来た。
そこで藩主がお聞きになって「いかなることが起こったのか」と由来をお調べになったところ、あの山姥といったのはその土地の武家の若党仲間の女と密通して妊娠し、隠しきれなくなったので、女の知り合いが越後にいたのでそれを頼みに二人連れでここまで来たのだが、しきりに陣痛が起こって、例の田んぼで出産してしまい、すぐに赤子を津幡門というところに投げ捨て、夫婦は越後の知り合いを尋ねて行った。
しかし親兄弟というわけでもなく、女の幼友達であったのを頼みに思って行ったのだが、女の浅はかさで、その村で子を産んだ難儀、その子を川へ流したということから、友達は疎んじ嫌って、越後にもいられなくなり、上方へ逃げ上ったところ、上方の関所で女を通さなかった。

"Then let us pray to the mountain witch," they said, and carried and shouldered her to that rice field. From then on, children with smallpox, people with eye diseases, the deaf, those with bent backs, and even those who crawled on their knees came crawling to pray to the mountain witch. Not only from nearby villages but also from distant villages, retainers from local samurai households - old and young, men and women, high and low in status - came gathering in palanquins and vehicles. They built a shrine, erected a torii gate, named it "Mountain Witch Hall," and day and night the crowds never ceased, with pilgrims coming from neighboring villages and even adjacent provinces.
When the feudal lord heard of this and inquired "What has occurred?" and investigated the origins, it turned out that the so-called mountain witch was actually a young retainer who had committed adultery with a woman from his peer group in the local samurai household. When she became pregnant and could no longer hide it, since the woman had an acquaintance in Echigo, they relied on this connection and the two came to this place together. However, she suddenly went into labor and gave birth in that rice field, immediately abandoning the baby at a place called Tsubata Gate, and the couple went to seek out the acquaintance in Echigo.
But this person was not a relative but merely a childhood friend of the woman, whom she had counted on. Due to the woman's thoughtlessness - having given birth in that village and having the child cast into a river - the friend shunned and despised them, making it impossible to stay in Echigo. When they fled toward the capital region, they were not allowed to pass through the checkpoint in the capital region.
