Though he had resolved to go out to Edo to see what opportunities there might be, while he was hesitating over this and that, his mother unexpectedly suffered a stroke, making departure out of the question. Since Gihei was particularly a filial man, he spared no effort in nursing her, calling doctors and prayer healers from here and there, wearing himself out with worry. Being originally of modest means, he fell into debt in various places, and the continuous expenses from late autumn through mid-winter caused Gihei himself to develop an abscess on his back. At first he tried to hide it, attributing it to worry over his mother's illness, but it was not a condition that could be concealed, and as it gradually festered, it became very difficult to cure with ordinary treatment. Already in dire straits, this additional expense was added, and even those with whom he had some connection gradually became

cold-hearted. He sold his stored weapons and various implements, and though his spare long and short swords had no curve, he bent and sold them anyway, along with the couple's change of clothes and night bedding. After that, even the copper water vessel and tea kettle were sold, until finally the only thing remaining was a broken pot with a lid to feed the four mouths, and even for that there was no money. In his desperation, when he borrowed money at high interest as a temporary measure, seeing his helpless situation, those heartless people who knew nothing of human compassion pressed him with harsh demands day and night, morning and evening. Though Gihei, suffering from serious illness, desperately refused their demands to keep them from his mother's ears, he was severely pressed, and the swords of words and spear-points of relentless logic were harder to defend against than thousands upon thousands of enemy cavalry. When he regretted his masterless state, his wife too was consumed with worry that wore away at her very being.
