舞台での芸風は変わったが、日常の行いは父にも勝っていた。贔屓の人々が招いても、いい加減には茶屋へも行かず、もしやむを得ず行く時はいつも袴を脱がない故に、客もかえって窮屈がるほど、行儀正しい生まれつきであった。さすがに昔の梓弓を引く武士の血筋で、女中などは雁の便りを求めては玉の緒が絶えんばかりに嘆き、人目の関所を忍び兼ねながら慕い来る者も多かったが、自然と柳下恵の行いに等しく、みだらな事や怪我にもならず、女は冷淡だと恨まれても、その操を守ることの堅固なこと、大人や君子も恥じるべきほどであった。はじめ

Shinsui was an orphan with no relatives, so he relied on Onoe Baikō as a father figure. Moreover, Baikō, recognizing his manly spirit, made a brotherhood pact with him, pledging to become as clouds and rain together. Even after coming of age, their bond never ceased and was closer than that of actual brothers. What manner of promise from past lives could this have been? From the autumn of the year of the Dog, Raizō (Baikō's stage name) somehow began to fall ill. Though he forced himself to continue performing, his condition gradually worsened, so from the second month of the year of the Boar he withdrew from the stage to recuperate. Shinsui visited daily and never neglected his nursing care. However, there was no sign of recovery at all, and as his condition on the sickbed grew progressively worse, word reached his patrons as well.
