自序
我（ワレ）嘗（カツテ）いへること有（アリ）。青楼（セイロウ）は
我（ワガ）為（タメ）の雪隠（セツヰン）なりと。夫（ソレ）如何（イカン）
なれば。持（モツ）たが病（ヤマヒ）の腹痛（フクツウ）に脳（ナヤ）
金屎（カネグソ）をひらんが為（）尻（）をぼつ

現代語訳
自序
私はかつてこう言ったことがある。「遊郭とは、私にとっての雪隠（便所）である」と。それはなぜかといえば、持病の腹痛に悩む者が、溜まった金糞（銭という名の糞）を出すために尻をまくって、この色里（吉原）に通うことが繁く［多いからだ］。
英語訳
Preface by the Author
I once said this: "The pleasure quarters are, for me, nothing but a privy." Why so? Because, afflicted with the chronic ailment of a bellyache, one lifts up one's hem to relieve oneself of accumulated "gold-dung" (money that has become as dung), and thus one finds oneself frequenting this little pleasure district all the more often.
