通言総籬凡例
○此書（コノシヨ）ハ論語（リンギヨ）ニ所謂（イハユル）。損者（ソンシヤ）三 友（ユウ）ヲ以（モツ）テ大 意（ヰ）
トス。蓋（ケダシ）総籬（ソウマガキ）ト題（ダイ）セルハ流行（リウコウ）ニ後（ヲクレ）タル古（フル）句（ク）
ノ。雑（マヂリ）無（ナキ）ヲ以￣ツ テ也￣リ。
○艶治郎（エンジラウ）は青楼（セイロウ）の通句（トヲリク）也。予 去々（キヨ〳〵）春（ハル）江戸
生（ムマレ）艶気（ウハキノ）椛焼（カバヤキ）ト云（イヘル）。冊子（サウシ）ヲ著（アラハ）シテヨリ。己（ウマ）

通言総籬 凡例
○この書は、『論語』にいわゆる「損者三友」をもって大意とする。そもそも「総籬」と題したのは、流行に遅れた古い句（言葉）で、混じり気のないものを用いているからである。
○艶治郎（えんじろう）は青楼（遊郭）で通用する句（言葉）である。私は一昨年の春、「江戸生まれ艶気かばやき」という冊子を著してより、うつけた（分別のない）客を指してそう言うようになった。よって、この書においてその名（艶治郎）を借りて登場人物の名とする。気之介・志菴も、ともにあの（遊郭の）……

Tsūgen Sōmagaki: Prefatory Notes
○ The general theme of this book is based on what the Analects of Confucius calls the "three harmful friendships" (sonsha sannyū). The reason it is titled "Sōmagaki" (Total Fence/Full Lattice) is that it employs old phrases that have fallen behind current fashion, and are used without adulteration.
○ "Enjirō" is a word commonly used in the pleasure quarters (seirō). Since I published the booklet entitled "Edo Umare Uwaki no Kabayaki" (Grilled and Basted: Born in Edo and Full of Amorous Spirit) the spring before last, the term has been used to refer to a besotted, foolish patron. I have therefore borrowed this name for a character in this book. Kinosuke and Shian are likewise from that (world of the pleasure quarters)...
