るべきたつきも絶（た）え果（は）て、行（ゆ）く末（すゑ）猶（なほ）如何（いか）なる憂目（うきめ）に逢（あ）はんも計（はか）りがた
し。身（み）は浮（う）き舟（ふね）のうき橋（はし）を、渡（わた）る危（あやう）き業（わざ）ぞとは、かねて覚悟（かくご）の上（うへ）ながら、
斯（か）くまで無惨（むざん）の境界（きやうかい）に陥（おちい）らんとは、千早振神（ちはやふるかみ）ならぬ身（み）の、如何（いか）で知（し）るべ
き由（よし）あらん。今更（いまさら）運（うん）の拙（つたな）きを、互（たがい）に喞（かこ）つ有様（ありさま）は、哀（あは）れといふも愚（おろか）なり。
其後（そのご）十五人は、皆 村々（むら〳〵）へ連（つ）れ行（ゆ）かれ、畠（はた）の草刈（くさかり）などを命（めい）ぜらるゝことあ
りしに、皆々（みな〳〵）、如何（いか）んぞ甘（あまん）じて禽獣（きんじう）に等（ひと）しき夷狄（いてき）のために使役（しえき）せらるべ
き。さりとて業（わざ）に就（つ）かざれば、鞭笞（べんち）の苦（くる）しみあるをもて、竊（ひそか）に申（まを）し合（あは）せ
て、雑草（ざツさう）をば畠（はた）に残（のこ）し、禾穀（くわこく）をば皆（みな）抜（ぬ）きすてたりしに、其 後（ご）は草（くさ）とりを命（めい）
ぜらることもなくて日（ひ）を送（おく）りしが、或日（あるひ）、其処（そこ）より五日路（いつかち）ほどあるべき
由（よし）の処（ところ）より、官人体（くわんじんてい）のもの来（きた）り、漂客（こなた）を見（み）て、何事（なにごと）か詮索（せんさく）の事（こと）ありて立帰（たちかへ）

く程（ほど）に、五日路（いつかぢ）ばかりは、人の往来（わうらい）の跡（あと）もありしが、それより後（のち）は、道（みち）とい
ふ道（みち）もなく、茫々（ばう〳〵）たる野原（のはら）の草（くさ）を分（わ）けつゝ過（す）ぎ行（ゆ）くに、あたりに人里（ひとざと）と
てもあらざれば、食物（しよくもつ）などは、馬（うま）に付（つ）けたる品（しな）を与（あた）へられ、夜毎（よごと）に草（くさ）を枕（まくら）
にて、故郷（こきやう）の夢（ゆめ）を結（むす）びつゝ、三十三日がほど進（すゝ）みしとき、はじめて一線（いツせん）の
道（みち）を得（え）て、傍（かたはら）に農家（のうか）も見（み）えしが、三十五日 目（め）には、いと大なる都（みやこ）につきに
けり。後（のち）にて聞（き）けば、これぞ韃靼の国都（こくと）なりと云（い）ふ。
都（みやこ）に入（い）りければ、やがて奉行所（ぶぎやうしよ）と覚（おぼ）しき所（ところ）につれゆかれたり。そこ
らあたりに居（ゐ）あはす人々（ひと〴〵）、何者（なにもの）の来（きた）るやらんと、あやしめる様子（やうす）なり。

帰る手立ても完全に絶えてしまい、これから先どのような辛い目に遭うかも見当がつかない。わが身は浮き船の浮き橋を渡るような危うい稼業だとは、かねてから覚悟のうえのことながら、これほどまで無残な境遇に陥ろうとは、神ならぬ身では、どうして知るすべがあろうか。今さら運の拙さを互いに嘆く有様は、哀れというも言葉足らずである。
その後、十五人はそれぞれ村々へ連れて行かれ、畠の草刈りなどを命じられることがあったが、皆々、どうして甘んじて禽獣にも等しい夷狄のために使役されようか。さりとて仕事に就かなければ鞭打ちの苦しみがあるので、ひそかに申し合わせて、雑草は畠に残し、穀物の苗は皆抜いて捨ててしまった。その後は草取りを命じられることもなく日々を送っていたが、ある日、そこから五日路ほどの距離にある場所から、官人のような者が来て、漂流者たちを見て何事か詮索したのち、立ち去っていった。その後二十日ほど過ぎて、先に来た者たちが今度は十人でまた来て、この村の住民の中から三人を選んで呼び出し、漂流者十五人とともに馬に乗せつつ、どこへとも

行く行く土地の様子を見るに、水田というものはまったくなく、道すがら畠ばかりで、粟・稗などの雑穀を植えていた。また山には、日本で見たことのある木もあり、見たことのない木もあり、なかでも五葉の松などはとても多かった。こうして過ぎ行くうちに、五日路ほどは人の往来の跡もあったが、それより先は道らしい道もなく、広々とした野原の草を分けながら進んでいくと、あたりに人里とてもないので、食べ物などは馬に付けた荷物の品を与えられ、夜ごとに草を枕として故郷の夢を見ながら、三十三日ほど進んだとき、はじめて一筋の道を見つけ、傍らに農家も見えてきたが、三十五日目には、たいそう大きな都に着いた。後で聞けば、これこそが韃靼の国都であるという。
都に入ると、やがて奉行所と思われる場所に連れて行かれた。そのあたりに居合わせた人々は、何者が来たのかと、怪しんでいる様子であった。

Yet that they should be plunged into circumstances so wretched as these — how could any mortal soul, no god, have foreseen such a thing? That they now lamented to one another the wretchedness of their fate was a scene pitiable beyond words.
After this, the fifteen men were taken off to various villages and at times ordered to weed the fields. But not one of them was willing to meekly submit to being used as a laborer by people no better than beasts — barbarians of the lowest kind. Yet if they refused to work, they faced the agony of the lash. So they secretly conspired among themselves, and left the weeds standing in the fields while pulling out and discarding all the grain seedlings. After that, they were no longer ordered to do any weeding, and passed their days in idleness. Then one day, a man who appeared to be some sort of official came from a place said to be about five days' journey away, examined the castaways with some manner of inquiry, and then departed. About twenty days after that, ten men — including the one who had come before — arrived again, selected three of the village inhabitants, and, seating them on horseback together with the fifteen castaways, led them away toward some unknown destination.

As they traveled along, they observed the character of the land: there was not a single paddy field to be seen; all along the road there were only dry fields planted with miscellaneous grains such as millet and barnyard millet. In the mountains, there were trees both familiar from Japan and entirely unknown to them; among these, the five-needled pine was especially abundant. As they continued on their way, for about five days there were traces of human traffic along the road, but beyond that there was no proper road at all, and they made their way by pushing through the tall grass of vast open plains. With no human settlements anywhere in sight, their food was whatever provisions were tied to the packhorses. Each night they pillowed their heads upon the grass, dreaming of their homeland, and after about thirty-three days of traveling, they at last came upon a single trail, with farmhouses visible by the wayside; and on the thirty-fifth day, they arrived at a very large city. They later learned that this was none other than the capital of Tartary.
Upon entering the capital, they were presently taken to what appeared to be a magistrate's office. The people gathered in the vicinity looked on with suspicion, wondering who these strangers might be who had arrived in their midst.
