ひしのみならず、見（み）すてヽ顧（かへり）みざる不人情（ふにんじやう）を思（おも）へば、憤恨（ふんこん）やるかたなく、
且（か）つは彼（かれ）を信（しん）せし後悔（こうくわい）の程（ほど）何（なに）に喩（たと）へん様（やう）もなかりき。然（しか）るに奥州（あうしう）磐（いは）
前郡（まへごほり）小名浜（をなはま）のもの三人、漂流（へうりう）して此地（このち）にありと、役人（やくにん）よりのしらせによ
り、取（と）りあへず三人にて訪問（はうもん）せり。万里（ばんり）の波濤（はとう）漂（たゝよ）ひて、辛（から）くも此（こ）の地（ち）に
吹着（ふきつ）けられ、何（いづ）れを見（み）ても故国（ここく）を思（おも）ふ種（たね）となり、思案（しあん）に余（あま）る折柄（をりから）なれば、
日本 国（こく）といふだになつかしきに、況（まし）てや僅（わづ）かに十 余里（より）をへだてたるば
かりの隣国（りんごく）、奥州（あうしう）小名浜（をなはま）の知人（しるべ）なりしかば、奇遇（きぐう）とも奇縁（きえん）とも更（さら）にいふ

金を奪っただけでなく、見捨てて顧みない不人情を思うと、憤りのやり場がなく、また彼を信じたことの後悔は何に例えようもなかった。ところが、奥州磐前郡小名浜の者三人が漂流してこの地にいると、役人からの知らせによって、急いで三人で訪問した。万里の波を漂って、辛うじてこの地に吹き寄せられ、何を見ても故国を思う種となり、思案に余る折であったので、「日本国」というだけでも懐かしいのに、まして僅か十余里しか隔てていない隣国、奥州小名浜の知り合いだったので、奇遇とも奇縁とも言葉にしようもなく、ただ父母兄弟に会ったような心地がして、しばらくの間は互いにこれまでの辛酸を語り続け、また共に異国の土となることなどを嘆き、一同涙を流したが、いつまでも嘆いても始まらないことだ、あなたたちの船が損じているなら、こちらの船に同居してくださいと言って、かの三人を連れて来て、その後は九人等しく、息苦しい船底で寝起きした。

さて、かの三人の者の来歴を尋ねると、これも同じ年（明和二年酉年）の十一月、奥州磐前郡小名浜より下総銚子へ渡ろうとして、十二反帆の住吉丸に、同村の沖船頭善四郎、上乗り七兵衛ら六人が乗り組み、米四百三十俵を積んで出帆したところ、同夜半より逆風に遭って困り果てた折、またも翌々朝に至って、西風が激しく波が高いために、舵を損じ櫓を折り、進退自由ならずして、米二十五、六俵を残した外は、全てこれを海中に打ち捨て、一同髪を切り、七兵衛の脇差を海中に投じて、ひとえに海神の救助を仰いだけれども、風向きは度々変わって、その勢いは少しも衰えず、およそ三十日ばかりの間、どこともなく漂う中、久しく雨が降らなかったので、十二日頃より飲料水がだんだん尽き、善之丞、甚四郎らは、もう渇死したので、菰に包んで船の片隅に片付けておくなど、その悲しさは言うのも愚かなほどであった。

However, they received word from officials that three men from Onahama in Iwamae District, Ōshū Province had drifted to this place, so the three of them hurried to visit them. Having drifted across ten thousand li of waves and barely been blown to this shore, everything they saw reminded them of their homeland, and in this time of endless worry, even just hearing "Japan" was heartwarming, let alone meeting acquaintances from Onahama in Ōshū, a neighboring region separated by only ten-odd li. This was such an extraordinary coincidence and fateful connection that words could not express it - they felt as if they had met their own parents and siblings. For a while they continued telling each other of their hardships up to this point, and together lamented that they might become dust in a foreign land. All shed tears, but endless lamenting would accomplish nothing, so they said "If your boat is damaged, please share our vessel," and brought those three people back with them. Thereafter, all nine lived together in the stuffy ship's hold.

When they inquired about the background of those three men, they too had set sail in the same year (the second year of Meiwa, year of the rooster) in the eleventh month, attempting to cross from Onahama in Iwamae District, Ōshū Province to Chōshi in Shimōsa Province. Six men including the village headman Zenshirō and supervisor Shichibē had boarded the twelve-tan sail vessel Sumiyoshi-maru, loaded with 430 bales of rice. After departing, from that same midnight they encountered headwinds and were in desperate straits. Then on the morning of the day after next, with fierce westerly winds and high waves, they damaged their rudder and broke their oars, unable to advance or retreat freely. Except for twenty-five or twenty-six bales of rice they kept, they threw everything else into the sea. All cut their hair, and Shichibē threw his short sword into the sea, earnestly praying for the sea god's rescue. However, the wind direction changed repeatedly and showed no signs of abating. During approximately thirty days of drifting aimlessly, there had been no rain for a long time, so from around the twelfth day their drinking water gradually ran out. Zennosuke and Jinshirō had already died of thirst, so they wrapped them in straw matting and placed them in a corner of the boat - their sadness was beyond words.
On the night of the twenty-sixth, it rained a little, so they gathered all possible containers - small boats, buckets, and every vessel available.
