日の出によってようやく東西南北も分かりました。半日一夜の空腹で、その上何やかやと大方のものは前日の暴風の最中に海へ流し捨て、飯米は七八俵ほど船底にありましたが、飲み水はみな揺りこぼれてなくなってしまったので、まず生米を噛み、潮水でのどを潤し、「せめて人の住む島であってほしい」と四方に心を配って見ておりますと、雲霧のように、船の流れて行く向こうの方に島山と思われるものがかすかに見えたので、いずれも喜び、船の流れて行く方向なので、だんだん近寄るだろうと見定めておりましたところ、三時間ほど流れると、右の島山の近辺に近寄りました。
ところが、本船も岩に当たり波に打たれ、ひどく破船して大量に海水が入り、その辺りは遠浅のためか、本船が全く動かなくなったので、伝馬船が船底にあったのを取り出し、まず十二人の内五六人が乗り移り、竹なども本船の内にあったので、伝馬船を漕いで右の島山へ上がり、水があるか、人家もあるかと、五六人で手分けして探しましたが、人家もなく水もなかったので、また伝馬船に乗って

With the sunrise we finally came to know east, west, south and north. After half a day and night of hunger, and with most everything having been swept overboard during the previous day's violent storm, we had about seven or eight bales of rice remaining in the ship's hold, but all our drinking water had spilled out from the rocking, so we first chewed raw rice and moistened our throats with seawater, hoping "if only this might be an island where people live." Looking carefully in all directions, we saw what appeared to be an island mountain faintly visible like a cloud or mist in the direction our ship was drifting. Everyone rejoiced, and since it was in the direction of our drift, we determined that we would gradually draw closer. After drifting for about three hours, we approached the vicinity of that island mountain.
However, our main ship struck rocks and was battered by waves, suffering severe damage with a tremendous amount of seawater pouring in. Perhaps because the area was a shallow shoal extending far from shore, the main ship became completely immobilized. We retrieved a tender boat that was in the ship's hold, and first five or six of the twelve men transferred to it. Since there were also bamboo poles in the main ship, we rowed the tender to the aforementioned island mountain and went ashore. We divided into groups of five or six to search for whether there was water or human habitation, but found neither homes nor water, so we boarded the tender again and
