舟のものども漂舟（へうしう）の上（うへ）申候は、南部（なんぶ）又は松前（まつまへ）の浜辺（はまべ）などへ適々（たま〳〵）渡（わた）り来（きた）
り候 事（こと）も有＿レ之よし。前方（まへかた）あの辺（へん）にて一度（いちど）見（み）候 義（ぎ）御 座（ざ）候よし。其処（そのところ）の
ものへ鳥（とり）の名（な）を承（うけたまは）り候へば、しかめと申（まをし）候よし申候。

又 御尋（おたづね）、右（みぎ）大鳥（おほとり）の外（ほか）小鳥（ことり）の類（るゐ）並（ならび）に獣類（けものるゐ）見当（みあた）り不＿レ申候やとの義（ぎ）なり。
一、右 大鳥（おほとり）の外（ほか）、磯辺（いそべ）にて雁（がん）鴨（かも）の類（るゐ）見懸（みか）け申さず、総体（そうたい）鼠（ねずみ）の色（いろ）の羽（はね）にて
頭（かしら）赤（あか）く尾（を）は黒（くろ）く、鳶（とび）などより余程（よほど）大（おほ）ぶりに相見（あひみ）へ申候 鳥（とり）、《振り仮名：適〻｜たま〳〵》磯辺（いそべ）の干（ひ）
あがり候 岩（いは）の上（うへ）などに居（をり）申候を見（み）かけ申候。是（これ）も右（みぎ）の蟹（かに）をとりたべ

曲げて釣り針のように作り、流れ寄った切れ帆などをほぐして、抜いた糸等をより合わせて、それを右の釘針に付け、石を重りにして、御当地で行う延縄のように作り、かねてその大鳥を潮に漬けておき、その身をひらひらと引き裂いて、餌に刺してそれを磯辺の岩の上から遥か向こうへ投げ出し、しばらく間を置いて引き上げると、付けた釘針の数々にかかった魚は島鯵、赤魚、もいほの類、その他は御当地では見ない魚とも大分釣れました。右の魚どもを潮水で煮たり、また干し焼きにしても食べました。針に使う釘は、破船の板が流れ寄った時に抜き取って置いたので沢山ございます。餌には右の蟹の足を折って付けてもよろしゅうございます。且つ右の大鳥の名前は存じませんでしたが、当春御当地堀江町の舟の者どもが漂流の話で申すには、南部または松前の浜辺などへたまたま渡って来ることもあるとのこと。前方あの辺りで一度見たことがあるとのこと。そこの者に鳥の名前を聞けば、しかめと申すとのことでした。

また、お尋ね、右の大鳥の他に小鳥の類並びに獣類は見当たらないかということです。
一、右の大鳥の他に、磯辺で雁や鴨の類は見かけず、全体が鼠色の羽で頭が赤く尾は黒く、鳶などよりもよほど大きく見える鳥が、たまたま磯辺の干上がった岩の上などにいるのを見かけました。これも右の蟹を取って食べる様子に見えます。小鳥も茅の中、茱萸の木、桑の木立の中に下りることもございますが、何という鳥かは注意して見ていないので分かりません。春の頃から夏になったかと思われる時分、鶯や時鳥なども鳴くので、それと注意して聞けば、聞き慣れない小鳥の音もします。殊の外面白いさえずりもございますが、捕らえる考えもございませんので、どのような小鳥であるか、形は見ませんでした。獣は何も見ませんので、いないものと思われます。

They said they had once seen them in that area before. When they asked the locals there for the bird's name, they were told it was called "shikame."

Another inquiry: were there no small birds or beasts other than the large birds?
One: Other than the large birds, we saw no geese or ducks at the shore. We occasionally saw birds with overall mouse-colored plumage, red heads and black tails, appearing much larger than kites, perched on rocks exposed at low tide along the shore. These also appeared to catch and eat the aforementioned crabs. Small birds would also come down into the miscanthus, elaeagnus trees, and mulberry groves, but since I did not pay careful attention to what kinds of birds they were, I cannot say. During what seemed to be spring turning to summer, bush warblers and cuckoos also sang, so when we listened carefully for them, we could hear unfamiliar small bird songs as well. There were some exceptionally beautiful songs, but since we had no intention of catching them, we did not observe what kinds of small birds they were or their appearance. We saw no beasts at all, so there appear to be none.
