て、中のくぼみのある岩で飯などを炊き、いずれも食べました。物語をいたしますのは、善八、仁三郎、平三郎で、堀江町の善八が船の衆中に申すには、「難風で吹き流されなかったならば、この先はともかく、まずここまでも来ることはできなかったでしょう。皆方には何とも思われないでしょうが、我々三人は、昨日元の島を出船の際、当てのないことゆえか、苦難ながらも二十年余り住居したところなどのことが心残りで、島の見える内は、振り返って島の方を眺めました」と話し、誠に久々に住居し命を長らえていた所なので、もっともそうであろう。

な。矢より早い船にこの御祓が挟まっていることは、不思議というのもあまりある」と、万度千度伏し拝み、早やこの上帰国も致したると思う心地がして、また御祓を船より海上へ流し、その流れゆく方へ帆を開き、勇んで進んで走らせたところ、二十七日昼前と存じられた頃、右無人島を出船いたし三日三夜海上を乗り、元文四未年五月朔日の朝、煙の立つ島が見えたので、乗り付けて島人に会って承ったところ、八丈島とのことでした。よってその御役人方の御吟味の上、御船にて帰国を仰せ付けられ、有難い仕合いと存じます。右八丈島にて髪や月代などを整え、御役人中より時の衣類などを下し置かれました。
享保四亥年十二人吹き流されたうち、九人は病気、その方ども三人、いずれも
金銀等を所持していないかとの御尋ね。

That these purification strips should be caught on our boat that runs faster than an arrow - this is more than merely wondrous!" We prostrated ourselves in worship countless times, feeling as though our homecoming was now assured. We again cast the purification strips from the boat into the sea, opened our sail toward the direction they drifted, and sailed forward with renewed vigor. Around what we believed to be before noon on the 27th, we departed from that uninhabited island and sailed the seas for three days and three nights. On the morning of the first day of the fifth month of Genbun 4 (Year of the Sheep), we saw an island with smoke rising from it. When we approached and met the islanders, they told us it was Hachijo Island. Therefore, after examination by the officials there, we were ordered to return home by official ship - a truly grateful fortune. On Hachijo Island, we arranged our hair and shaved our foreheads, and the officials provided us with contemporary clothing.
