我が国の西南端に位置し、琉球の海中に沖永良部島という島がある。昔は松平薩摩守の所領で、在番の代官等は、皆薩州鹿児島より派遣された者であった。時は安永二巳年[今より百二十二年前]のことである。同島の代官附役に池山喜三左衛門・中原仲左衛門という二人がいて、任期満了で鹿児島に帰ろうとする時、かねて薩州より回送しておいた十端帆の船に、下人四人・船頭一人・水主十二人、合計十九人が乗り組み、荷物には、沖永良部島より琉球大島へ送るべき蔵米四十七石四斗余り、薩州へ送るべき筵三百二十八束と六枚、その他乗組一同の手回り品、航海中の糧米、在番の者より薩州へ届けるべき預かり物等を積み入れ、六月二十四日に同島を出帆した。ところが洋中で順風に恵まれず、進退ままならなかったため、同二十六日に琉球大島の内の屋喜内間切という港に駆け込み、同地に七月二十日まで船を係留し、その

Eighth Tale: A Satsuma man drifts to China and returns home aboard a merchant ship.
At the southwestern tip of our country, in the sea of Ryukyu, there is an island called Okinoerabujima. In the past, it was a domain of Matsudaira Satsuma-no-kami, and the resident deputy officials were all dispatched from Kagoshima in Satsuma Province. This was during the second year of An'ei, the year of the Snake [122 years ago from now]. Two men named Ikeyama Kisaemon and Nakahara Nakazaemon served as assistant deputy officials on the island. When their terms of office were completed and they were about to return to Kagoshima, they boarded a ten-sail ship that had been previously sent from Satsuma Province. The crew consisted of nineteen people in total: four servants, one ship captain, and twelve sailors. Their cargo included forty-seven koku and four to of stored rice to be sent from Okinoerabujima to Ryukyu Oshima, 328 bundles and six pieces of straw mats to be sent to Satsuma Province, personal belongings of all crew members, provisions for the voyage, and various items entrusted by resident officials to be delivered to Satsuma Province. They departed from the island on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month. However, they encountered unfavorable winds on the ocean and could not proceed as planned, so on the twenty-sixth day they took refuge in a port called Yakiuchi-magiri within Ryukyu Oshima, where they anchored their ship until the twentieth day of the seventh month, and then...
