と、一同が力を尽くしたが、逆風のため進退ままならず、わずかに桁を帆柱の代わりにして、時々の凪の合間に綱を引いて漂っているうちに、同月十八日には西風が激しく吹き荒れ、山岳をも吹き飛ばすほどの勢いであったので、波浪が激しく空に舞い上がり、打ち込む海水で船は水船のようになった。一同は命の限り水を汲み出し、かろうじて沈没は免れたものの、風波が激しくなるたびに碇六個までもが摩り切られ、今にも破船しそうな様子であったので、このような状況では到底人力の及ぶところではなく、ただ生死を天に任せるしかないと、一同が髻を切り、船頭所持の脇差その他鏡、小刀、鋏の類を身代わりとして海中に投げ入れ、ひたすら仏神を伏し拝み、どうにかして陸地に近づけてくださいと乞い祈ったが、いっこうにその験はなく、漫々たる海上で山のような怒涛に打たれながら流れていくしかなかった。船頭が努力しなかったわけではなく、水主もまた怠けていたわけではないが、天運が味方しない時は、どうすることもできないのである。

Though all aboard exerted their utmost effort, they could make no progress forward or backward against the contrary winds. Using only a beam as a makeshift mast, they drifted by pulling ropes during brief intervals of calm. On the 18th of the same month, western winds blew with tremendous fury - with such force that they seemed capable of blowing away mountains. The waves surged violently, dancing up to the sky, and the seawater that crashed aboard made the ship like a water vessel. All hands bailed water for their very lives, barely avoiding sinking, but each time the wind and waves intensified, even their six anchors were chafed through. With the ship appearing ready to break apart at any moment, they realized this was far beyond human capability, and they could only entrust their lives and deaths to heaven. The entire crew cut off their topknots, threw the captain's short sword, mirrors, small knives, scissors and such items into the sea as substitutes for themselves, prostrated themselves before Buddha and the gods, and prayed desperately to be brought closer to land. But there was no sign of divine response, and they could only drift helplessly on the vast ocean, battered by mountainous furious waves. It was not that the captain failed to make effort, nor that the sailors were negligent, but when heaven's fortune does not favor you, there is nothing that can be done.
