二人 乗（の）り組（く）み、九月十三日 同所（どうしよ）を出帆（しゆつぱん）し、十月十七日といふに、嬉（うれ）しやわ
が日本国 東蝦夷地（ひがしえぞち）の内（うち）ねもろ（根室）に着（つ）きにけり。時（とき）は維（これ）我国（わがくに）の寛政（くわんせい）五 年（ねん）
九月三日にて、一同は、天明（てんめう）四 卯年（うとし）より、彼（か）の国（くに）の歴数（れきすう）に従（したが）ふたれば、四十
余日（よにち）の差（ちが）ひを生（せう）したり。三人は直（たゞち）に松前奉行（まつまへぶぎやう）の手（て）に渡（わた）され、次（つい）て江戸（えど）
に送（おく）られ、将軍（しやうぐん）の覧（らん）にも備（そな）はりしことにて、我国人（わがこくじん）の漂流（へうりう）して欧羅巴大陸（ヨウロツパたいりく）
に到（いた）り、恙（つゝが）なく帰朝（きてう）せるは、此（この）三人を以（もツ）て嚆矢（はじめ）とし、いともめでたき珍事（ちんじ）
なり。然（しか）るに憐（あはれ）むべし。小市（こいち）は十 数年来（すねんらい）の苦辛（くしん）も水（みづ）の泡（あわ）、日本に着（つ）き
たるまてにて、ねもろに没（ぼつ）したるは、気（き）の毒（どく）とやいはん不運（ふうん）とやいはん。
さて二人は将軍（しやうぐん）の糾明（きうめい）も終（をは）りて、白洲（しらす）を退（しりぞ）き、雉子橋（きじばし）なる御厩（おうまや）の宿（やど）に
帰（かへ）り、官命如何（くわんめいいかん）と待（まち）けるが、これより先（さ）き、光太夫（くわうだいう）の一船（いツせん）行衛（ゆくえ）知（し）れざりし
とき、三ヶ年（ねん）は待（ま）ちたれども、少（すこ）しも手（て）がかりなかりければ、海上（かいしよう）にて果（は）
てたることとなし、白子村（しらこむら）にても仏事（ぶつじ）を営（いとな）み、これまで多（おほ）く水死（すいし）せるもの

夫と彫付（ほりつ）けたるもありたれば、こ
れ此人（このひと）の帰（かへ）りしなりと、観（み）る者（もの）市（いち）
をなせりとぞ。

二人が乗り組み、九月十三日同所を出帆し、十月十七日に、嬉しいことに
我が日本国東蝦夷地の内の根室に到着した。時は我が国の寛政五年
九月三日で、一同は天明四卯年より、ロシアの暦に従っていたので、四十
余日の差が生じていた。三人は直ちに松前奉行の手に渡され、続いて江戸
に送られ、将軍の御覧にも供されたことで、我が国の人が漂流してヨーロッパ大陸
に到り、無事に帰国したのは、この三人が最初であり、実にめでたい珍しい出来事
である。しかし憐れむべきことに、小市は十数年来の苦辛も水の泡、日本に着いた
時にはもう、根室で亡くなってしまったのは、気の毒というべきか不運というべきか。
さて二人は将軍の取り調べも終わって、白州を退き、雉子橋にある御厩の宿に
帰り、官命がどうなるかと待っていたが、これより先、光太夫の船の行方が知れなかった
時、三年間は待ったけれども、少しも手がかりがなかったので、海上で死んだ
こととして、白子村でも仏事を営み、これまで多く水死した者

The two men boarded the ship, departed from that place on the thirteenth day of the ninth month, and on the seventeenth day of the tenth month, joyfully
arrived at Nemuro in the eastern Ezo region of our Japan. The time was the third day of the ninth month of Kansei 5 in our country,
and since the group had been following the Russian calendar from the fourth year of Tenmei, year of the rabbit, there was a difference of more than forty
days. The three men were immediately handed over to the Matsumae magistrate, then sent to Edo
and presented before the shogun. For people of our country to drift to the European continent
and return home safely, these three men were the first, making this a truly auspicious and rare event.
However, pitifully, Koichi's hardships of more than ten years came to nothing like foam on water, for by the time they reached Japan,
he had already died in Nemuro—whether to call this pitiful or unfortunate.
Now the two men, having finished their interrogation by the shogun, withdrew from the court and returned to their lodgings at the stables near Kiji Bridge,
waiting to see what official orders would come. Earlier, when the whereabouts of Kōdayū's ship were unknown,
they waited three years but found no trace at all, so assuming they had perished at sea,
Buddhist services were held in Shirako village as well, and for the many who had died by drowning

for the repose of their souls,
memorial towers were erected
in Edo's Ekōin temple,
but now that more than a decade
had passed, when word came that
the sailors from Shirako had returned,
the people who heard were as if in a dream,
searching for the memorial towers in Ekōin, asking "Is it this one or that one?"
They found stone towers shaped like ships with "Kōdayū"
carved on them, so realizing
this was the one who had returned, crowds of onlookers
gathered like at a market.

This year also ended, and on the thirteenth day of the sixth month of the following year, Kansei 6, year of the tiger,
both men, having drifted to foreign countries
and endured many years and hardships before
returning home, were deemed to have shown
admirable devotion and were each granted thirty ryō in gold. As a special measure,
they were not permitted to return
to their home provinces but were made to reside
within the medicinal herb cultivation
grounds on vacant land in Edo's
Banchō district, and as
monthly stipends,
Kōdayū received three ryō
and Isokichi two ryō each
