there are many examples of ships being damaged and people killed even by slight winds. Furthermore, a small boat like the one built this time uses timber that may well be weak at sea, and moreover lacks iron entirely — the nails being made by joining pieces of wood, and lashings made from tree bark. To sail in such a small boat from this far end of the Indies across an unknowable distance of thousands upon thousands of leagues to Japan is an utterly uncertain undertaking, and therefore I cannot possibly agree to it." He declared this flatly, and no matter how they admonished him he would not consent, nor would he assist with the shipbuilding. Therefore, the rest of the group reasoned with him: "It is true that this ship is small, but we are grateful to have been born in the divine land of Japan. To remain enslaved to barbarians at this far end of the Indies and turn to dust in the soil of this island is unbearably shameful. Even if one were to survive, it would be meaningless. One can hardly call it living a human life." Yet he showed not the slightest sign of yielding, and declared: "In any case, since this is what I have resolved, whether you drift into the sea and become sea foam, or by some miracle return to Japan, do as you wish.

As for myself alone, I shall remain on this island, and I believe it is better to live on, even if only for a year or half a year." And with that, he was done. Although it was his own wish, they could not bear to leave him behind alone in this barbaric land, and they exhausted every means and tried every approach to persuade him, but he would not listen in the slightest. They agreed among themselves that on the day of departure they would forcibly seize him and make him board, but Gorozo hid himself in various places, never coming near them at all. When they inquired of his master, he had hidden himself so thoroughly that his whereabouts became completely unknown, and so they were obliged to settle on setting sail with eleven men. The one thing they feared above all was the possibility that he might reveal their deception to the natives.
Now, the ship they had built with every last ounce of their energy was at last completed, and on the fourth day of the third month of the Year of the Boar, the eleven men gathered together, enshrined the deity of Atago, purified their hearts, and prostrated themselves in worship. They then drew a sacred lot from the Grand Shrine of Amaterasu to determine whether Japan lay to the north or east, and the lot indicated the northern direction. Subsequently, they drew another lot asking whether the auspicious day of departure would be at the end of the last ten days of the fourth month, and the lot came out indicating the middle ten days of the month,
