此処（こヽ）に廿日計（はつかばか）りも逗留（とうりう）して、日和（ひより）を待（ま）ちける間（あひだ）、或日（あるひ）舟（ふね）にて一人（ひとり）乗（の）り
来（きた）り、日本語（にほんご）にて、是（これ）より長崎（なかさき）まで海路（かいろ）百八十 里（り）ありなど、最（い）と懇（ねんご）ろに話（はな）
し、且（か）つ縫物糸（ぬひものいと）少々（せう〳〵）、髪（かみ）そり一 挺（てう）、縫物 針（ばり）、はさみ一 挺（てう）、米（こめ）二斗 程（ほど）、筍漬（たけのこつけ）少（せう）々を
持（も）ち来（きた）りて与（あた）へられたり。此者（このもの）時々（とき〴〵）長崎（ながさき）に来（きた）る由（よし）にて、能（よ）く皇国（くわうこく）の事（こと）
に明（あきら）かなれば、我（わ）が明君（めいくん）の御恩（ごおん）に報（むく）ゆる志（こヽろざし）なるべきにやと、一同（いちどう）有（あり）がた
く悦（よろこ）び合（あ）ひぬ。
又 或（あ）る日（ひ）の事（こと）なりき。此（この）漂流（へうりう）の客（かく）を観（み）んとて《振り仮名：来｜き【「た」脱ヵ】》りたる清人（しんじん）、何品（なにしな）に
ても備（その）へあれば、彼（か）の山（やま）へ往（ゆ）かれよと仕形（しかた）にて示（しめ）しければ、其処（そこ）に往（ゆ）き
たるに、又 鍋（なべ）一つ、木綿（もめん）《振り仮名：衣物｜きり【も】の》十一、米二三升、塩魚（しほさかな）少（すこ）しを与（あた）へぬ。此処（こヽ）に寺（じ）

や、指図（さしづ）の処（ところ）に其儘（そのまヽ）居（を）らず、勝手（かつて）に遊歩（ゆうほ）すること、諸子（しよし）のために悪（あ）しからん

この場所に二十日ほども滞在して、天候を待っている間、ある日船で一人やって来て、日本語で「ここから長崎まで海路百八十里ある」などと、とても親切に話し、また縫物糸少々、髪剃り一挺、縫物針、鋏一挺、米二斗ほど、筍漬少々を持参して与えてくれた。この人は時々長崎に来るということで、よく日本の事情に詳しいので、我が明君の御恩に報いる心であろうかと、一同ありがたく喜び合った。
また、ある日のことであった。この漂流者を見に来た中国人が、何か品物があれば、あの山へ行かれよと手振りで示したので、そこに行ったところ、また鍋一つ、木綿の衣服十一枚、米二三升、塩魚少しを与えてくれた。この場所には寺院が多いので、一同は二三ヶ寺を見物したが、その様子は日本のように釈迦大日のような木像金仏ではなくて、寺の奥には、日本の畳刺しが持つようなものが何脚も見えたが、これは住職等が起き臥しするものと思われた。詳しく

二三寺を見た時、奉行の頭らしき者がやって来て、「なぜここに来たのか。指示された場所にそのままいないで、勝手に歩き回ることは、あなた方のためによくない」と言ったので、すぐに船に帰ったが、この辺りはすべて寺院が多く、その間に農家と思われる家も混じっているが、その百姓の風体は、頭の周りはすべて剃り、真中に一寸四方ほどの円さに髪を残し、それを後ろへ長く垂らしていた。昔は髪を剃らない風俗であったのに、近年満州人に攻め取られ、今はすべてその風になったということである。バタン島にいる間は、暦を見ることもできず、月の大小も分からず、皆の推測で、一ヶ月は大の月、一ヶ月は小の月としていたのに、中国人に会ってから、去年閏月があったことも聞いたので、これまで正月と思っていたのは十二月、二月と思っていたのは正月で、全く一ヶ月の思い違いをしていたことを知った。

While staying at this place for about twenty days, waiting for good weather, one day a person came by boat and spoke very kindly in Japanese, saying "From here to Nagasaki is 180 ri by sea route," and brought sewing thread, a razor, sewing needles, scissors, about two to of rice, and a little pickled bamboo shoots to give them. This person said he sometimes came to Nagasaki, and was well-informed about Japanese affairs, so everyone gratefully rejoiced together, thinking this must be his intention to repay the benevolence of their enlightened ruler.
Also, one day, a Chinese person who came to see these castaways gestured that if they had any goods, they should go to that mountain. When they went there, he gave them another pot, eleven cotton garments, two to three sho of rice, and a little salted fish. Since there were many temples in this place, they all visited two or three temples. The situation was not like Japan with wooden statues and golden Buddhas of Shakyamuni and Dainichi, but in the depths of the temples they saw several things like what Japanese tatami-sashi carry, which they thought were used by the resident monks for sleeping. When they observed two or three temples, someone who appeared to be the head of the magistrates came and said, "Why did you come here? Instead of staying where you were instructed, wandering around freely will not be good for you," so they immediately returned to their ship. This area had many temples throughout, with houses that appeared to be farmhouses interspersed among them. The appearance of those farmers was that their heads were completely shaved around the perimeter, leaving hair in a circle about one sun square in the center, which hung down long behind them. In the past the custom was not to shave the hair, but in recent years they were conquered by the Manchus, and now everything has become that style. While they were on Batan Island, there was no way to see a calendar, they didn't know the lengths of months, and by everyone's speculation they made one month a long month and one month a short month.
