【Right Page】 【Page center: (70)】 Having spent a night here, when dawn came, they could see land far off to the east. Believing that surely through the protection of the gods and buddhas they had arrived in Japan, they joyfully raised their sails and drew closer. The ship anchored some ten chō offshore, and the captain and sailors—four men in all—transferred to a lighter and went ashore. First and foremost, they searched the sandy shore hoping to find even a single drop of water. At that point, eight men of unusual appearance, carrying spears, bows and arrows, and firearms, spotted them and approached. The strangers seemed to be saying something, but their language was incomprehensible and their meaning could not be understood. By this, the crew realized that this land was not Japan. The castaways then gestured—rubbing their throats—to show that they were seeking water. The strangers, perhaps thinking they were hungry, reached into their garments and produced dumplings to offer them. The castaways returned these and continued to demonstrate that they wanted water, until the strangers finally seemed to understand. They led the four men about thirty chō away and showed them where there was a spring of fresh water. The four men drank their fill, quenching their throats that had been parched with thirst for more than twenty days, and the feeling of relief in that moment was beyond all comparison. 【Left Page】 【Page center: (71)】 It had been more than twenty days since they had last obtained water. It was the first time in one hundred and fifty or sixty days that they had set eyes on land and on other people. Their bodies had yet to recover from the exhaustion, and the eight men stripped the four castaways of their clothes and seized their willow trunks containing their changes of garments, then led the four, now completely naked, about four or five chō away and shoved them inside a wretched hovel resembling a salt-burning hut. There they lit pine torches and allowed them to warm themselves, then dressed them in garments made of animal hide, which felt extremely uncomfortable to all of them. Nevertheless, relying solely on the warmth the hides afforded, they endured for a time. Food was served in the form of millet dumplings, and while they were eating, the eight men went to the shore, smashed the lighter to pieces, and made off with the nails and metal fittings. The castaways all felt as though they were small birds caged, and were consumed with dread, anxiously wondering what fate might befall them hereafter. In the midst of this anxiety, four men who appeared to be headmen or village elders arrived, accompanied by some two hundred men of the appearance of farmers. All of them wore small hats or hoods on their heads and were dressed in garments of animal hide. Among them——
