As the Qing is a great nation, we traversed no more than a ten-thousandth of its territory, yet upon arriving at the capital of Nanjing from Fuzhou, we found that for more than ten ri from the capital's entrance, there was an unbroken stretch of town. What lay beyond that, we had no way of knowing. Furthermore, in this place there were four or five large shrine buildings, each likely measuring about 240 ken in length, with a great many worshippers visiting, and stalls selling various goods were set up under the eaves. There were also bridges resembling the Uji Bridge, with railings finished in vermillion lacquer and raised lacquerwork, and many other buildings were also lacquered in vermillion. Everywhere people sat or lay down, the floors were paved with flagstones, and chairs and beds were furnished. However, this was what the townspeople's quarters were like; as for the interior of the castle, we had no means of viewing it and so that remained unseen. After arriving in Nanjing, we rested for fourteen or fifteen days, after which word came that we were to present ourselves at the government office. The following morning, accompanied by an official, we went there, and a person who appeared to be a town official questioned us in Japanese 【Left Page】 【Page center: (85)】 about the three men's home province, the date of departure, and so forth. We answered in detail, from the fact that we were from Toba in Shishu, that we had departed in the ninth month of the previous year, to having drifted ashore on Taiwan, where both our main vessel and the small boat were completely smashed to pieces and our nails and metal fittings were taken from us. This account was relayed to all the officials present and recorded item by item. Afterward, according to a Qing person who spoke Japanese, a large number of investigating officials had been dispatched to the previous country, and it was certain that the eight bandits who had earlier smashed our boat and stripped away our clothing would be brought to justice. From this government office, the three of us were each presented with three rolls of gold brocade, three hundred sheets of felt, and three pieces of bar silver measuring about five sun in width and three sun in length. Upon returning to our lodgings and exchanging this bar silver for coins, we found that one piece of silver was worth six hundred mon in coins. The meals during our stay here consisted of one soup and seven dishes, including carp sashimi, crucian carp simmered in broth, and catfish dengaku, among other things. In general, carp and crucian carp were plentiful while saltwater fish were scarce. We were also frequently served sake, and each time, about five varieties of soup and six or seven side dishes were brought out; after the banquet, we were served confections, manjū, and yōkan. The expenses for all of this were covered by the government office —
