【Right Page】 【Page center: (86)】 Tofu was priced at two mon per piece for an amount equivalent to about one and a half chō in Japan, and konjac, yam, and other vegetables seemed cheaper than in Japan. Felt (mōsen) traded at a price of one piece of bar silver for every ten sheets. Now, each day some fifty Qing people who claimed to have visited Japan were stationed there, holding banquets and showing us exceedingly warm hospitality. In particular, since we could communicate a little through language, there were times when we momentarily forgot the sorrows of being in a foreign land. Thus, morning and evening, being served only heavily flavored meals, we eventually grew tired of the taste and requested barley rice; however, we were told there was absolutely no barley, and were instead given buckwheat noodles, which were quite different from those in Japan — far thicker and poor in flavor, so that for the most part they were difficult to eat. Furthermore, we were always made to sit on top of three sheets of felt each, and perhaps because we were made to take a daily decoction of nothing but ginseng, we suffered greatly from excessive heat rushing to the head. When we reported this and declined the treatment, three physicians came and gave us other medicine, and only then did the flushing finally subside. 【Left Page】 【Page center: (87)】 On the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month, the government office presented each of the three of us with two kosode robes (with white habotai silk on the outside and glossy twill silk on the inside), five rolls of white glossy twill silk, five rolls of white rinzu silk, five rolls of white crepe, one double-faced haori of patterned twill silk, and one sash. The robes were made in the Japanese style, and the fabric was of a quality resembling wadding cloth. Earlier, in Fuzhou, we had each been given three padded garments of scarlet crepe, three unlined garments of the same, and three haori of scarlet broadcloth; and in Taiwan, we had been given garments of felt and haori of gold brocade. However, since all of these were made in the style of those places, we returned them all without wearing them. Thus the year drew to a close, and the evening of New Year's Eve arrived. Had we been in our home villages, the work of pounding mochi and sweeping out the soot would have ended, and our families would have gathered together to bid farewell to the old year; but here we were, sending off the year in a foreign land whose distance from home we could not even measure in thousands of ri. Our wives and children must be waiting for us — how and in what manner would they be spending the year? Surely they would have set out a formal meal offering and prayed for our safe return — this was the shared feeling in the hearts of all three of us as we faced the year's end and thought alike of home. Now, perhaps because there is no practice of credit sales in this country, not a single person was to be seen going about collecting debts on the night of New Year's Eve —
