The sounds of musical instruments rising near and far were heard like song; there were houses where koto was being played or aloeswood incense burned, and east and west, neighboring houses were holding lively banquets, so that the streets had the festive air of a holiday. On this night, some fourteen or fifteen Qing people who had previously visited Japan held a lavish banquet with the three castaways as guests of honor. First, large candles were lit in some thirty places, and all manner of decorative arrangements brought by the guests — large and small island-and-crane displays, figures of cranes and tortoises, plum blossoms and narcissus, and various other ingenious creations — totaling more than one hundred and forty in all, were spread out across the entire space. With fine wines and delicacies, they urged one another on in turn, serving sweets as well. Thereafter they sang, danced, and performed — though the rhythms were entirely beyond our comprehension — yet the kindness of receiving such generous hospitality somewhat soothed the sorrow of all three of us. Having endured one banquet after another until this point, the three of us were already greatly fatigued, and now finding ourselves once again at this lavish celebration, we could not keep up with the toasting of cups, and grew drowsy from early evening; though the mountains of delicacies and rare dishes lay before us, we paid them no heed. Meanwhile, all the Qing people sang and danced vigorously through the entire night, and it was only around sunrise that they at last all departed.

When dawn broke, it was the spring of the Year of the Rabbit. During the three days of the New Year, breakfast was dumplings and lunch was rice porridge. The appearance of the city was that every house kept its doors shut, and from the fourth day onward, doors were opened and people resumed their usual occupations — much the same in general as the customs of Ganzan (the first three days of the New Year) in our own country. Then, once the first month had passed and it became the third day of the second month, many people were seen making religious pilgrimages on that day, and in various parts of the city men and women mingled together, some dancing, others holding banquets to enjoy themselves — a great many indeed.
And so the twenty-third day of the third month arrived. This day was at last the day when the three castaways would happily set out on their journey home. From before dawn, they busily made various preparations; and when the appointed hour came, invited by numerous officials, they departed from their lodgings. From the inn, the innkeeper and some eighteen or nineteen men and women, along with some forty or fifty servants, came to see them off as far as the harbor. At the moment of parting, it was truly as though they could not bear to separate; all together they shed tears and wept with sorrow. The three of us, too, though we were glad for today's departure, likewise found ourselves in tears, and unexpectedly found ourselves lamenting the farewell. What bond from a previous life could there have been — that between Japan
