【Right Page】 【Page center: (90)】 To have become guests in distant China at the far edge of Japan, to have received kindness surpassing even that of one's own flesh and blood, and to have been thought of so warmly — it was nothing short of wondrous. At the time of departure, the king bestowed upon each of them thirty rolls of silk, thirty rolls of scarlet cloth (shōjōhi), along with long woolen rugs, Chinese paper, and various other goods, as well as a six-sun square plate of silver engraved with characters and adorned with crimson tassels. They were told this was a kind of pass for use aboard ship, and were instructed to hang it around their necks. Obeying these orders, all boarded the vessel, and passing across the sea without incident, on the nineteenth day of the fourth month they arrived at Nagasaki harbor in Hizen Province. There, they were subjected to an investigation at the magistrate's office, and all the goods they had been given in Qing China were confiscated. In place of the shipboard passes, each received three pieces of silver. As for the remaining scrolls and other items, when they left Nagasaki, at the urging of an official from Toba — who said it would be a burden to carry such goods on a long journey — these too were all sold off, and only a small portion was kept as souvenirs for their home country, to be carried back with them. 【Left Page】 【Page center: (91)】 Thus it was that on the twenty-fifth day of the fifth month, a courier arrived from the Nagasaki magistrate's office with word that an official from Toba and two relatives each of the three men should come to receive them. More than thirty days later, an official from Toba — Shiraoi Kin'emon and two others — along with six or seven family members arrived in Nagasaki. There, each of the three was duly handed over to their parties, and they immediately departed Nagasaki. Traveling by sea and land without incident, on the evening of the twenty-third day of the seventh month, they arrived at their home of Toba. However, the three men were first summoned to the magistrate's office and sternly informed that henceforth they were forbidden for the rest of their lives from pursuing a livelihood as sailors. Only then were they finally permitted to return home. Of the original crew of six, two had perished of thirst at sea, and one had died of illness in the country of Taiwan; the remaining three — the skipper Koheiji, the sailor Wadamura Kichiemon of Wadamura, and Gonpachi of Mikasho-mura — all safely returned home. It was declared an event rarer than the blooming of the udumbara flower, and relatives and acquaintances gathered together, rejoicing through tears of joy, all raising their voices as one to celebrate their good fortune.
