一 本書は児童に海事を知らしめ国民教育の一助と為さんと欲する

一 書中、徳川時代を限りて収るものは其已前の記録の寥々徴すべ

等に拠りて述ふ
一 漂人の言ふ所今日より見るときは誤謬なしといひがたし漂着の

呼、今や世界五大陸の情勢は風雲暗澹として、狂乱の波が山をも漂わし岩をも流そうとしている。この中にあって海神を叱咤し、国防の帆を操り、殖産の櫂を執り、我が大日本帝国をして安らかに富強の彼岸に到達させるのは、いったい誰の任務であろうか。

一、書中、徳川時代を限って収録したのは、それ以前の記録が非常に少なく、参考にできるものが少ないためである。
一、各談話は、漂流者の供述書および漂流者について聞き取り記録した当時の雑記などに基づいて述べた。
一、漂流者の言うところは、今日から見れば誤りがないとは言い難い。漂着の地名その他風俗・鳥獣・草木等については最終巻に図画を挿入して考証する予定であるので、一々訂正はしない。
一、文章はできるだけ事実を直接記すことを主とし、あえて妄りに推測の語を用いない。

Preface
1. This book has been compiled with the purpose of educating children about maritime affairs and serving as an aid to national education.
1. The book limits its scope to the Tokugawa period because records from earlier times are extremely scarce and there is little material available for reference.
1. Each account is based on the testimonies of castaways and contemporary miscellaneous records compiled from interviews with these castaways.
1. What the castaways relate cannot be said to be without error when viewed from today's perspective. Since I plan to include illustrations and provide scholarly examination of the place names where they were cast ashore, as well as customs, birds and beasts, plants and trees, etc., in the final volume, I do not correct each instance individually.
1. The writing principally aims to directly record facts and deliberately avoids the use of speculative language.
