けるは、大勢（おほぜい）のもの一処（いツしよ）に居（を）るは究屈（きうくつ）なるべし、少（すこ）しは我（わ）が家（や）に引取（ひきと）り
て、かくまひ得（え）さすべし。といふ。されど、こなたは死（し）ぬも生（いき）るも只（たヾ）一（いツ）

ると、先に引き分けて連れ去った土人がまた来て、今度は藤蔵を指名して連れて行った。まるで生け簀に囲う魚のように、彼らが必要な度ごとに取りに来る様子なので、誰もが行く末が不安に思われて空恐ろしく、たとえ牢屋に等しい粗末な家であっても、数日の間住み慣れて、死に遅れた者さえ、まだ多く留まっているので、見も知らない他所に移されて、辛い目に遭って死ぬより、むしろこの場所でと、藤蔵をはじめ一同も固く行くことを拒んだが、彼は全く聞き入れずに、またもやどこともなく連れて行った。その後十日ばかりが経つ間に、幸助・才蔵・久次郎・松蔵・定次も次々と死んだので、いよいよ浮世のはかなさに、夜も眠れず月日も忘れて嘆き悲しむ有様は、その哀れさは言いようがない。すでに九人に死に別れ、四人には生き別れ、残った者はただ七人。そこでどのような所に行くとしても、必ず一緒にいようと約束し、番の者には常々、日本への便りの船があれば、知らせてください
