と頼（たの）みおけり。扨（さて）三月の初頃（はじめごろ）、番（ばん）の者（もの）はこなたの七人をば、程近（ほどちか）きカラ（════）
ガニ（════）の津（つ）といふ所（ところ）につれゆき、水主（かこ）楫取（かぢとり）十人ばかり乗組（のりく）みて、今（いま）や漕（こ）ぎ
出（いで）んとする船（ふね）あるに乗（の）れとすゝむるゆゑ、こは兼（かね）て頼（たの）みし事（こと）なれば、必（ひつ）
定（ぢやう）日本（にほん）に渡（わた）すことならんと、心（こヽろ）うれしく乗（の）り込（こ）みたり。また霄（よひ）【宵ヵ】の内（うち）に
其処（そこ）を出帆（しゆツぱん）して、追風（おひかぜ）なれば三帆（みほ）をあげ、南（みなみ）をさして走（はし）りゆく。十三人
の朋輩（ほうばい）を、娑婆（しやば）と冥土（めいど）に残（のこ）し置（お）き、唯（たヾ）七人のみ帰（かへ）り去（さ）るは、何（なん）となく心（こヽろ）の
あとに残（のこ）れども、さすがに故国（こヽく）をさして行（ゆ）く船（ふね）と思（おも）へば、おのづから船（ふな）
路（ぢ）は急（いそ）がれたり。かくて陸地（をか）に近（ちか）き海（うみ）を行（ゆ）くこと廿日（はつか）ばかり、又 灘（なだ）と
覚（おぼ）しき所（ところ）を二日（ふつか）ばかり漕（こ）ぎ渡（わた）りしが、其（そ）の間（あひた）日和（ひより）もつヾき、始終（しじう）追手（おツて）の

The unfamiliar bird songs and the scent of unseen flowers were curious, but their hearts were focused only on hurrying toward their homeland, so these things did not deeply register in their ears or eyes. Before long, a native came in and indicated that they should prepare themselves to be taken before the chief. He tried to take five of the seven—Kinbei, Ichisabu, Teigoro, Chota, and Yakichi—so the remaining two, Magoshichi and Kogorou, appealed to him saying, "Please let us two go together as well," pleading in various ways, but he would not listen at all. He brushed away their clinging hands and departed with the five to who knows where. Thus Magoshichi and Kogorou, the two remaining, were separated from their companions while living, and wondered what would become of them, grieving and lamenting greatly. But since there was nothing else they could do, thinking that perhaps the people who had been taken away might return, they waited day after day for a while.
