一 書中徳川時代を限りて収るものは其已前の記録の寥々徴すべき
もの少きに由る
一 各談漂人の口供書及ひ漂人に就て聞き取り記したる当時の雑記
等に拠りて述ぶ
一 漂人の言ふ所今日より見るときは誤謬なしといひがたし漂着の
地名其他風俗禽獣草木等は最終の篇に図画を挿みて考証する覚悟
なれば一々弁正せず
一 行文はつとめて事実を直写するを主とし敢て妄りに推測語を下
さず

一 各話は漂流者の供述書および漂流者について聞き取りを記した当時の雑記等に基づいて述べる
一 漂流者の言うところは今日から見ると誤りがないとは言い難い。漂着の地名その他風俗、鳥獣、草木等は最終の編に図画を挿入して考証する予定なので、一々訂正はしない

Foreword
1. This book was compiled with the purpose of informing children about maritime affairs and serving as an aid to national education.
1. The book limits its collection to the Tokugawa period because records from earlier periods are sparse and few materials can be referenced.
1. Each account is based on the testimonial statements of castaways and contemporary miscellaneous records that documented interviews with these castaways.
1. What the castaways said cannot be said to be without error when viewed from today's perspective. Place names of where they drifted ashore, as well as customs, birds and beasts, plants and trees, etc., will be examined with illustrations inserted in the final volume, so individual corrections are not made here.
1. The writing primarily aims to directly transcribe the facts and deliberately avoids using speculative language.
