今ハ三十五ケ寺となる〇 首里（しり）の三大寺といへるハ。
天王寺。天界寺。圓覚寺をいふ。 王廟（わうびやう）ハ真咊志（まわし）
安里村（あんざとむら）にあり。今ハ 新（あらた）に 堂社（だうしや）を 建（たつ）るを 禁（きん）ず。
〇 国中（くにちう）たはれたる風俗にて。 女人（をんな）の 嫁（か）せざる 前（まへ）ハ
生平（つね）に 男子（をとこ）と 交（まじハ）り 遊（あそ）び。 市町（いちまち）など手をとりて
遊行（たはれある）く。 更（さら）にこれを 耻（はづか）しとせず。 両親（ふたおや）もまた 咎（とが）めず。
これ 一竒（ひとつ）の 国俗（ならハし）也。 然（さ）れども 嫁（よめ）りて 後（のち）ハ 節（せつ）を 守（まも）
りて。 他（た）の 男（をとこ）と 同座（どうざ）だにせず。 其禁（そのいまし）めもその 貞（てい）も。

〇 娼家（しようか）の 流行（はやり）うた

現代語訳

○寺院は臨済宗と真言宗（古義）の二宗のみで、全部で三十七ヶ寺あったが、久米の普門寺、西福寺が廃寺となり、今は三十五ヶ寺となっている。○首里の三大寺というのは、天王寺、天界寺、円覚寺を指す。王廟は真和志安里村にある。今は新たに堂社を建てることを禁じている。
○国中が放縦な風俗で、女性が嫁ぐ前は、普段から男子と交際し遊び、市町などで手を取って戯れ歩く。全くこれを恥ずかしいこととせず、両親もまた咎めない。これは一つの奇異な国の習俗である。しかしながら嫁いだ後は節操を守り、他の男と同座することさえしない。その戒めもその貞操も、他の国の及ぶところではない。（もし国法を犯す者は君万物等の祟りによってたちまち神罰を受けるが、早く懺悔して罪を訴え出れば祟りを消すことができるという）
○国中に遊女が非常に多い。歌女もいる（こちらでいう芸者のこと）。蛇皮線を弾いて国の歌を歌う。その旋律は非常に面白いという。

○The temples belong only to two sects: Rinzai Zen and Shingon (Old School), totaling thirty-seven temples originally. However, Fumon-ji and Saifuku-ji in Kume were abolished, so now there are thirty-five temples. ○The three great temples of Shuri refer to Tenno-ji, Tenkai-ji, and Engaku-ji. The royal mausoleum is located in Mawashi Anzato village. Currently, the construction of new temples and shrines is prohibited.
○The entire country has licentious customs. Before women marry, they regularly associate and play with men, walking hand in hand through markets and towns in a flirtatious manner. They do not consider this shameful at all, nor do their parents censure them. This is one peculiar national custom. However, after marriage, they maintain their virtue and will not even sit together with other men. Their prohibitions and their chastity are beyond what other countries can match. (If anyone violates the national laws, they immediately receive divine punishment through the curse of various spirits, but if they quickly confess and report their sins, the curse can be removed.)
○Throughout the country there are very many courtesans. There are also singing women (what we would call geishas). They play the jabisen and sing the songs of their country. The melodies are said to be very interesting.
