そもそも琉球国は、薩摩国の南方にあたって、船路でおよそ八百四十里である《海上では六町を一里とする。陸地の三十六町を一里とする時は、一千百四十里である。和漢三才図会に海上三百八十里と記したのは誤りである》。その国は南北の長さが五十九里余り、東西はわずか十里に足らない《陸地の三十六町を一里とする》。
その地は北極を出ること二十六度二分三厘である。それゆえ暖かい気候であることは他国に勝っている《正月に桃や桜の花が咲き、冬になっても衣類に綿を入れることはなく、蚊がいなくならない》。
