かねてより身の上にくるすのもんをとなへ
ければ天狗即あたをなさんとすれどもつ

る者さへくるすを唱て天狗をにがしける
によききりしたんの唱へ奉らばいかゝ
有べきや
弟 へるしいなると云唱へは聴聞せり☩べんぜる
と云唱へやうを教へたまへ

現代語訳
打たれた杖を見て恐れて逃げるが如くである」と。サン・グレガウリヨ或いはユデよについて宣うには、その者は信仰を持たず十字をも用いず、かえって蔑ろにするといえども、ある時多くの天狗が群がりたる所に入り、大いに恐れ害を為されじが為に、予てより身の上に十字の文を唱えければ、天狗即座に害を為さんとすれどもついに叶わざりしということなり。然らば信仰を抱せざる者さえ十字を唱えて天狗を逃がしけるによって、キリシタンが唱え奉らばいかほどであろうか。

Saint Gregory, or regarding Jude, declares: even though that person possessed no faith and did not use the cross, but rather scorned it, when he entered a place where many demons had gathered and greatly feared being harmed, because he had previously recited the sign of the cross upon his body, the demons immediately tried to harm him but ultimately could not succeed. If even one who lacks faith could drive away demons by invoking the cross, how much more powerful would it be when Christians invoke it?
