　家光公其文　上覧被成るに周防守状に四五里
　在郷え鷹野に参り泊りのあり只今の帰り候故早
　々申上候と有を御手に被為取　上覧被　仰出る
　は扨社大きに騒き相見へたりと御意成さる壱
　岐守を初め御近習之衆面々如斯遠鷹野に参
　候と申上るに上方騒くとの　上意心得かたくと皆
　々ひそめき申処に夫ゟ四五日過案之如く一揆之
　事申来る人々御心根を感し入申事也其段何と
　も御意はなしといへとも下々も考候得は如何様
　周防守程之者・（之）差下し候状　上覧遊さるゝを

　存せざる事有間敷候此節に至りうか〳〵と如此之
　儀は不申越筈に而候処を御考被遊候而書面に見
　へさる先を御察し被遊候と見へたり誠に凡慮
　之及はさる儀と皆人感し奉る也
島原記録曰寛永十四年丁丑春之比より
　公方様折々御不例之由に而表え　出御稀に有
　之就夫諸人色々取沙汰申候且又遠国に而は御他界
　に候得共御隠密之由風聞有之

　公御不例御心重に被思召依之為御養生諸

家光公がその文書を上覧されると、周防守の書状には「四、五里離れた在郷へ鷹狩りに参り、泊まりがあり、ただ今帰ったところなので、急ぎ申し上げます」とあるのを御手に取られて上覧され、仰せ出されるには「さては大いに騒いでいると見えたのだな」と御意をなされる。壱岐守をはじめ御近習の衆面々が「このように遠い鷹狩りに参ったと申し上げるのに、上方が騒ぐとの上意は心得難い」と皆々ひそひそと申すところ、それから四、五日過ぎて、案の如く一揆のことを申し来る。人々は御心根の深さに感じ入ったことである。その件について何とも御意はなされなかったが、下々も考えてみれば、いかにも周防守ほどの者が差し下した書状を上覧遊ばされるのを

存ぜざることがあるはずがない。この節に至ってうかうかとこのような儀を申し越さないはずのところを御考えになられて、書面に見えない先を御察しになられたと見える。誠に凡慮の及ばない儀と皆人感じ奉るのである。

島原記録に曰く、寛永十四年丁丑の春の頃より、公方様がしばしば御不例の由にて表へ出御されることが稀にあり、それについて諸人が色々と取り沙汰申し候。また遠国では御他界されたが御隠密の由という風聞がある。

坂家古日記に曰く、この公の御不例を御心重く思し召され、これにより御養生のため諸

When Lord Iemitsu examined the document, Suō-no-kami's letter stated: "I went hunting with hawks in the countryside four or five ri away, stayed overnight, and have just returned, so I report hastily." Taking this in hand and examining it, he declared: "So it did appear that there was great commotion." Iki-no-kami and the other close attendants whispered among themselves, "When he reports going hunting at such a distant place, the lord's statement that Kamigata is in uproar is difficult to understand." Then, four or five days later, as expected, reports came about the uprising. People were deeply moved by his profound insight. Although he made no particular comment on the matter, when even the lower-ranking people considered it, surely there could be nothing that would escape his notice when examining a letter sent by someone of Suō-no-kami's caliber.

At this juncture, when one would not carelessly report such matters, he seemed to have considered this and perceived what was not visible in the written document. Truly, this was beyond ordinary understanding, and all people were moved with admiration.

The Shimabara Records state: From around the spring of Kan'ei 14 (1637), the Shōgun was frequently indisposed, and his public appearances became rare. Regarding this, various people made all sorts of speculations. Moreover, in distant provinces, there were rumors that he had passed away but it was being kept secret.
