　四郎を尊み天人之由取沙汰して四郎学問之程は何
　分之事か知らねとも吉利支丹之至極難有其証拠
　を見せんと或は空をかける鳩を招我手之内に而卵
　を産せ夫を割て吉利支丹之経文を卵之内より
　取出し読聞せ或は竹に雀之宿りたるを枝折にし
　て見せ天草と有馬之間伊島といふ島有て此海
　上を陸路之如く則渡りて見せ色々不思議を諸人
　驚き宗門を信仰して悉く勧込各深志之者伊
　島へ渡り彼島にて勧法を請て其上に何事か相
　談なと致し候迚此島を談合島と申候

　十六歳に而名誉を致し候由近国風聞仕候此四郎
　稽古なしに読書を仕諸経之講釈を致し軈而吉

　鳩を招寄手之上に而卵を産せ夫を割て吉利支
　丹之経文を取出し見せ申候或は竹に雀之留り居

四郎を尊み天人であるとの噂が立ち、四郎の学問の程度がどれほどのものかは分からないが、キリシタンの極めて有難いその証拠を見せようと、空を飛ぶ鳩を招いて自分の手の内で卵を産ませ、それを割ってキリシタンの経文を卵の内から取り出して読み聞かせ、あるいは竹に雀が宿っているのを枝折りにして見せ、天草と有馬の間にある伊島という島で、この海上を陸路のようにそのまま渡って見せるなど、色々な不思議を行って諸人を驚かせ、宗門を信仰させてすべて勧誘し、それぞれ深い志を持つ者が伊島へ渡り、その島で勧法を受け、その上で何事か相談などをするということで、この島を談合島と申している。

別当杢左衛門覚書に記す。大矢野村に益田四郎という者がいて、年十六歳で名声を得ているとの近国での風聞がある。この四郎は稽古なしに読書をし、諸経の講釈を行い、やがてキリシタンの世になると申して勧め、その証拠を見せようとして天より鳩を招き寄せ、手の上で卵を産ませ、それを割ってキリシタンの経文を取り出して見せている。あるいは竹に雀が留まっているのを枝折りなどにし、万事不思議なことばかりを行い、天草と有馬の間にある湯島という島の海上を歩いて渡って見せているという。これを見聞きし、元来キリシタンを心底に含んでいる者は、その湯島の出合口で勧誘を受けているという。その後

Or he would show sparrows roosting in bamboo made into branch ornaments, and demonstrate walking across the sea between Amakusa and Arima at a place called Ishima as if it were dry land. Through these various miracles he amazed all people, made them believe in the sect, and successfully converted everyone.
