【右丁】  親類一門有けれは此者共にかゝる大事を申聞せんた  め湯島百姓庄三郎と同金作と云者当所有家之  内洲川え渡海し親類とも各滅亡すへきよし四郎  殿被仰与申聞候得は本より甚蔵といふ者我儘者  に而少も不信却て嘲候得は金作大に腹を立船に乗  り候所に吉兵衛といふ者大に驚き甚蔵方え行て  ケ様之大事を申来人を左様に嘲る事不可然事共也  と云けれは甚蔵も驚信し左様之事夢にも不存  候て懸に怠り申事偏に不覚之至也迚金作か船               ・(お)  に乗る所を色々侘事申て船ゟなろし四郎か云分細  【左丁】  かに聞感し入候得共洲川之浦人共等皆々群集し聞て  弥信しけるかくて金作庄三郎と談合島といふ湯島へ  帰りぬ頓て南有馬村庄屋治右衛門弟角蔵北有馬  村百姓三吉と申者両人え右之段申聞せけれは是も弥  感心して皆々外道宗門之間事いたし候 島原記日諸人悉く吉利支丹に帰復せしむる之由  今年七月之比ゟ少々雖及沙汰慎成事不相知其  上松倉長門守同右近在江戸に而島原留守居之家  老共急度穿鑿をも不遂所々聞合送日と云々 別本島原記日寛永十四年丁丑八月比ゟ下々説に当

【右丁】 親類一門がいたので、この者どもにかかる大事を申し聞かせるため、湯島の百姓庄三郎と同じく金作という者が当地有家の内の洲川へ渡海し、親類どもに各々滅亡すべきことを四郎殿が仰せになったと申し聞かせました。すると元より甚蔵という者がわがまま者で、少しも信じないばかりか却って嘲笑したので、金作は大いに腹を立てて船に乗ろうとしました。その時、吉兵衛という者が大いに驚いて甚蔵の元へ行って「このような大事を申してきた人をそのように嘲ることは良くないことだ」と言ったので、甚蔵も驚いて信じ「そのようなことは夢にも思わず、このように怠ったことはひとえに不覚の至りです」といって、金作が船に乗ろうとする所を色々と詫び事を申して船から下ろし、四郎が言った話を詳しく 【左丁】 聞いて感じ入りました。しかし洲川の浦の人々なども皆々群集して聞いて、いよいよ信じるようになりました。こうして金作と庄三郎は相談して島という湯島へ帰りました。すぐに南有馬村の庄屋治右衛門の弟角蔵と、北有馬村の百姓三吉という者の両人に右の件を申し聞かせたところ、これもいよいよ感心して皆々切支丹宗門のことを行うようになりました。 島原記には「諸人ことごとく切支丹に帰復させる」とあります。今年七月頃より少々沙汰に及んだものの、慎重なことは分からず、その上松倉長門守同右近が江戸にいて、島原の留守居の家老どもも厳重な穿鑿も行わず、所々に聞き合わせて日を送るありさまであったということです。 別本島原記には「寛永十四年丁丑八月頃より下々の説に当たって

【Right page】 Since there were relatives and family members [in that area], in order to inform these people of such important matters, a peasant from Yushima named Shōzaburō and another man named Kinsaku crossed the sea to Sugawa within Arieke in that locality, and told their relatives that Lord Shirō had declared that each of them would perish. Now there was originally a man named Jinzō who was willful and did not believe in the slightest, but rather mocked [the message]. This made Kinsaku very angry and he tried to board his boat. At that time, a man named Kichibei was greatly alarmed and went to Jinzō saying, "It is not proper to mock someone who has come with such important news." Then Jinzō was also surprised and believed, saying, "I never dreamed of such a thing, and my negligence in this matter is entirely due to my lack of awareness." He made various apologies to Kinsaku as he was about to board his boat, got him to come down from the boat, and listened carefully to what Shirō had said. 【Left page】 [Jinzō] was deeply moved by what he heard. However, the people of Sugawa harbor also all gathered to listen and became increasingly convinced. Thus Kinsaku and Shōzaburō consulted together and returned to the island called Yushima. Soon they informed two men - Kakuzō, the younger brother of village headman Jiemon of Minami-Arima village, and Sankichi, a peasant of Kita-Arima village - about the above matter. They too became increasingly convinced and everyone began practicing Christian religious activities. The Shimabara Record states that "all people were made to convert back to Christianity." Although there had been some rumors since around July of this year, the serious nature of the situation was not understood. Moreover, Matsukura Nagato-no-kami and his son Ukon were in Edo, and the senior retainers left in charge of Shimabara did not conduct strict investigations but spent their days making inquiries here and there. Another version of the Shimabara Record states: "From around the eighth month of Kan'ei 14 (1637), year of the Metal Ox, according to rumors among the common people..."
