[Right page] As he was trying to take [the items] back, about fifty to sixty peasants pursued him and killed the aforementioned Hyozaemon. According to the memorandum of Betto Mokuazemon, perhaps [they] thought it regrettable that Kakuzo and Sankichi were arrested - at a place called Oka in Minami-Arima, they killed deputy Hayashi Hyozaemon around the fourth hour (10 AM) on October 25th. They also planned to harm Honma Kuroemon, but a man called Chosuke, the village headman of Kita-Arima, who had always looked after Kuroemon and moreover was not a Christian believer, informed Kuroemon of this plot. They immediately planned to have him escape with one brother and one son accompanying him. However, since guards were stationed at various road checkpoints making passage impossible, the son and brother were sent via Arima [Left page] through the hot spring pass to Shimabara. As for Kuroemon, there was a gunsmith at a place called Kitaoka who did not appear to be a Christian, so [Chosuke] advised him to go to this gunsmith Daizen's place for consultation. Following this advice, three people including servants went stealthily along the shoreline of Toogata around 6 PM on October 25th. By chance, they found a small boat that had been abandoned by people who had come from Amakusa to worship Christian painted images of Buddha. They boarded this boat and rowed out. While doing so, many warships came from Shimabara led by chief retainer Okamoto Shinbei as commander. They met offshore of Tateishi in Arima village, and when the ships came close and [someone] called "What ship is that?", [he] answered "Honma Kuroemon," and from then reported the situation in Arima in detail to Shinbei.
