In Sōmura, Yamaushiro Koemon; in Kohama village, Takahashi Buemon; in Kitaoka village, Hayashi Hyōzaemon - these and other monks, shrine personnel, and even travelers on the roads were killed, some crucified, some buried in earth with only their feet showing, some made to ride horses backwards with banners attached and paraded through villages before being cut down. The local deputies reported these events to Shimabara. Consequently, that same day at nightfall, Matsukura Nagato-no-kami's chief retainer Okamoto Shinbei and all the young samurai boarded twenty ships large and small and set out toward Arima village. When they had traveled about two ri of the five and a half ri sea route, fires broke out in Fuzu village in the direction of Shimabara, and extensive arson could be seen throughout the domain. However, since the servants, boatmen, and sailors were all originally Christians,

they showed no disturbance and appeared to have a knowing expression on their faces. Only the samurai were utterly dismayed and lost their sense of direction. While they deliberated in confusion, the ships finally reached the waters off Arima village. At that point, Honma Kurōzaemon, the deputy of Arima village's Tōshō district, who had escaped being killed, came in a small boat and said: "Everyone, regarding your approach here - since there was someone who informed the rebels from the castle beforehand, Arima village has prepared strict arrays of bows and guns and is waiting for the ships. In such circumstances, it would be quite impossible to land and establish a position. Moreover, since fires appear to have been set throughout Shimabara castle, it would be best to withdraw into the castle." Okamoto Shinbei agreed this was reasonable. However, from the various ships, voices called out: "Now that our wives, children, and everything have been burned and lost, we should simply land and die fighting."
