し候事難成候つる由に而庄屋惣兵衛抔心替候義を
も曽知らぬ顔に而惣左衛門申候は島原之火之体夥敷
候定而城下より侍打出村々仕置可有之候一揆共たと
ひ如何程攻候とも要害能候間城下如何にも可為堅固
此節之事に候条何も忠節肝要に候さらは島原老中
え飛脚遣候半とて則惣兵衛目前に而書状調候は其元
ゟ村々え被打出候はゝ爰元之者共皆出合後切可仕候と

佐右衛門と云者耶蘇之古き絵像を隠置表具仕
度と日来内に願望す然共世を憚しに此絵像一夜
之内に望之模様に表具出来たり佐右衛門常之勤為
とて絵像を見に表具あり大験尊我仏偈之思限
なし近隣之内余に告知老若奇特之思を成佐志
木か宿所に群集を為代官聞付馳行見に聞しは物之
数ならす則彼絵像を押取散々引破焼失す又
有馬之内大矢村に三吉と作内と云宗門之棟梁あり則
此両人を搦取島原之城へ遣す宗門之者とも斯露顕

ただ三人でなくては一味仕る者がいない候故、こちらより手を出すことが難しい候つる由にて。庄屋惣兵衛などが心変わりした義をも全く知らぬ顔にて、惣左衛門申すには「島原の火の様子が激しく候。定めて城下より侍が打って出て、村々への仕置きがあるべし候。一揆共がたとえいかほど攻め候とも、要害がよく候間、城下はいかにも堅固なるべし。この節の事に候条、何も忠節が肝要に候。さらば島原の老中へ飛脚を遣わし候わん」とて、則ち惣兵衛の目前にて書状を調え候は「そちらより村々へ打って出られ候わば、ここもとの者共皆出合い後詰めを仕るべく候」と書き認め、達者なる者に申し付け候えと惣兵衛に申し渡し、島原へ差し越し候事。

Since there were only three people who would join their cause, it was difficult for them to take action from their side. Even though the village headman Sōbei and others had changed their allegiance, pretending not to know this at all, Sōzaemon said: "The fires in Shimabara are intense. Surely samurai will sally forth from the castle town to punish the villages. No matter how fiercely the rebels attack, since it is a strong fortress, the castle town should surely be secure. At this crucial time, loyalty above all is essential. Then let us send a messenger to the senior councilors in Shimabara." Right before Sōbei's eyes, he prepared a letter stating: "If you sally forth from there to the villages, all our people here will come out to provide rear support." He instructed a capable person to deliver this and sent him off to Shimabara.

Separate Record of the Shimabara Suppression Campaign: On the twenty-fifth day of the tenth month, in Ōe village in Shimabara, a man named Sashiki Saemon had hidden an old image of Jesus and had long secretly wished to have it mounted. However, being cautious of the world's judgment, this image was mounted in the desired manner within a single night. When Saemon viewed the image as part of his regular devotions, the mounting was magnificent and showed great efficacy, and his reverent thoughts toward his Buddha knew no bounds. He informed others in the neighborhood, and young and old alike were filled with wonder, gathering in crowds at Sashiki's residence. When the deputy heard of this and rushed to see, what he had heard was no trivial matter. He immediately seized the image, tore it to pieces, and burned it. Also, in Ōya village within Arima domain, there were two leaders of the religious sect named Miyoshi and Sakunai. These two men were immediately captured and sent to Shimabara castle. Thus the members of the sect were exposed
