所持していうす之絵像自ら一夜之内に表具
出来之由を申ケ様に崇き事御法度とて捨置可
申義に無之由触候故近郷之古吉利支丹共迄
崇候故所之奉行代官出家方をも追払少も及異
儀候者は殺候也

に肥前島原之城主松倉長門守勝家之領分に而所
之切支丹共庄屋か家へ集り宗旨之本尊を掛
渇仰しける処を代官見付て是程御法度成に
言語道断之義也と大に叱り座敷へ欠上り本尊

申上一々成敗すへしと訇りて欠出す其座に居
ける百姓共我等御法度之宗門なれは申上て成
敗せんと申さるゝも尤也但御本尊をあの通り

置難し外之同門之おもはくもあり追かけて打
殺せと評義して大勢追かけ来て道に而代官を
討殺ける此上は止事を得さる也追付御城より討
手来へし兼而之言合せは爰也時至ると思ふへし
迚近郷え触知せける元来其辺不残切支丹成

所持していたイエスの絵像が自ら一夜のうちに表具ができたという由を申し、このような尊い事は御法度とて捨て置くべき義理ではないという由を触れ回った故、近郷の古いキリシタンたちまでも崇拝した。そのため所の奉行・代官・出家方をも追い払い、少しでも異議を申す者があれば殺したのである。

They claimed that a picture of Jesus they possessed had miraculously received mounting overnight by itself, and because such a sacred thing was forbidden, they spread word that it should not be abandoned. As a result, even old Kirishitans in the neighboring villages came to worship it. Therefore, they drove away the local magistrates, deputies, and Buddhist monks, and killed anyone who raised even the slightest objection.
According to the Record of Elder Retainers, the Shimabara Rebellion began in late October of Kan'ei 14 (1637), when Kirishitans in the domain of Matsukura Nagato-no-kami Katsuie, lord of Shimabara castle in Hizen, gathered at a village headman's house and hung up their religious icon for worship. When a deputy discovered this, he severely scolded them saying "This is utterly outrageous when it is so strictly forbidden," rushed up into the room and pulled down the main object of worship

- the religious image - tore it up and trampled it underfoot, then stormed out cursing "I will report this to the castle and have each one of you punished." The peasants who were sitting there said "We are of a forbidden sect, so it is reasonable that you would report us for punishment. However, we cannot let stand the fact that you tore up our sacred image right before our eyes and trampled it underfoot. The other believers would think ill of us. Let us chase after him and kill him." After this discussion, a large group chased after and killed the deputy on the road. They then said "Now we have no choice. Soon warriors will come from the castle to attack us. This is what we have long discussed among ourselves. We should consider that the time has come," and spread word to the neighboring villages. Originally, that entire area was completely Kirishitan.
