　進而かゝる敵も大勢に而是を防く味方には
　新兵衛をはしめ同庄兵衛多久市左衛門伊藤
　半右衛門須賀喜太郎白石市郎右衛門坂田六
　左衛門桑野孫兵衛山後次兵衛同吉左衛門其
　外にも大勢有て良久せり合遠は鉄炮近付は
　鑓に而敵弐十人余討取残は追込両所に而敵
　五拾六人討取深江村両度之通合は是也討死
　之侍進藤与兵衛手負竹村新右衛門船田兵右
　衛門中西甚兵衛鉄炮手負萩野右馬之介右
　何れも鑓長刀疵深手其外右手鑓手浅手負之

　者数多有之此時新兵衛申さるゝは十分之仕合
　也追散したる敵に目を懸日を暮しては悪し
　かりなん勝之中之緒を固とは此節也早々可
　引取迚壱人も不残まとひ未之下刻島原之本
　城え引取也右深江村ゟ布津村へ注進するは
　今朝島原ゟ被押寄大勢討取唯今四郎左衛門
　屋敷え引籠候を続て責寄盶に危く見て候急
　加勢にて馳参由触遺はす依之布津村より堂
　崎村有家村有馬村其次々え右之次第触遣す
　故に追々馳集て深江村え馳来るといへとも

進んで攻撃した。敵も大勢でこれを防いだ。味方には
新兵衛をはじめとして同庄兵衛、多久市左衛門、伊藤
半右衛門、須賀喜太郎、白石市郎右衛門、坂田六
左衛門、桑野孫兵衛、山後次兵衛、同吉左衛門その
他にも大勢いて長い間せり合った。遠くは鉄砲、近づいては
槍で敵二十人余りを討ち取り、残りは追い込んで両所で敵
五十六人を討ち取った。深江村での二度の戦闘はこれである。討死
した侍は進藤与兵衛。手負いは竹村新右衛門、船田兵右
衛門、中西甚兵衛、鉄砲手負いは萩野右馬之介。
いずれも槍や長刀による傷で深手である。その他、手、槍手の浅手負いの

者は数多くいた。この時新兵衛が申したことには「十分な戦果
である。追い散らした敵に目を向けて日を暮らしてはよくない
だろう。勝利の中の緒を固めるとはこの時のことである。早々に
引き取ろう」ということで、一人も残らずまとまって未の下刻に島原の本
城へ引き取った。深江村から布津村へ注進することには
「今朝島原から押し寄せられて大勢討ち取られ、ただ今四郎左衛門
屋敷に引き籠もっているところを続けて攻め寄せられ、まことに危うく見えます。急ぎ
加勢に馳せ参じられますよう」という触れを送った。これにより布津村より堂
崎村、有家村、有馬村、その次々へ右の次第を触れ送った
ため、次々と馳せ集まって深江村へ馳せ来たが

Hanemon, Suga Kitaro, Shiraishi Ichiemon, Sakata Roku-
zaemon, Kuwano Magobei, Yamago Jihei, and Kichizaemon, along with
many others who fought fiercely for a long time. At distance with guns, up close with
spears, they killed over twenty enemies, drove back the rest, and in both locations killed
fifty-six enemies. These were the two engagements at Fukae village. The samurai killed in action
was Shindo Yohei. The wounded were Takemura Shinemon, Funada Hyoemon, Nakanishi Jinbei, and among those wounded by gunfire was Hagino Umanoske.
All suffered deep wounds from spears and long swords. Besides these, there were many others with light wounds to hands and from spear thrusts.

At this time Shinbei said: "This has been a complete success.
It would not be good to spend the day focused on the scattered enemies.
Securing one's position in the midst of victory—this is the time for that. Let us withdraw quickly."
So without leaving anyone behind, they assembled and at the late hour of the Sheep returned to the main
castle of Shimabara. The urgent message sent from Fukae village to Funo village was:
"This morning we were attacked from Shimabara, many were killed, and now those who have taken refuge
in Shiroemon's residence are being continuously attacked and appear to be in great danger. Please
hurry to our aid." Accordingly, from Funo village to Do-
saki village, Arie village, Arima village, and so on, this message was passed along,
so they rushed to gather and came racing to Fukae village, but
