[Right page] and there the general deliberations were settled. He announced: "Everyone, horses are unnecessary. One hundred horses prepared since the time of Lord Bungo-no-kami's governance have been saddled and led to the edge of the moat. Mount these and ride out. Thirty of you shall remain and guard the castle; all others shall ride out." However, everyone rushed to be first, and not a single person remained. Seeing this, Shinbei called them back, saying "There is one more matter to address together," and laying his long-handled spear across [the path], he said: "From here, those on the right shall ride out; those on the left shall serve as castle guards. Anyone who does not follow my orders this time shall, by the gods of Hachiman, be ordered to commit seppuku." He thus divided them left and right. Kyuho found himself sorted to the left side and, turning to Shinbei, said: "I am already [Left page] old and can no longer be of service hereafter. This is a fortunate occasion for me, so I beg to be allowed into the group on the right"—he pressed his hands together in supplication. To this, Shinbei replied: "That is quite an unseemly thing to say, year after year. Even if you were to ride out, I am the one who received this castle and shall hold it firm. You are not in a position to tell me not to worry about what comes after—what you are saying now is beyond all reason." At this, [Kyuho] said: "You are entirely right; I have been in error of late." Now, among the retainers of the domain, roughly two-thirds had been of Sofu's faction and roughly one-third of Shinbei's faction. When the rebellion broke out on this occasion, those within Sofu's group began boasting that they themselves [i.e., Sofu's side] were responsible, and even those who had previously shown favoritism [toward Sofu] now began to see...
