　限り心出来し上に新兵衛兼而之作法殊今度
　万事之作配無残処故皆々新兵衛に思付申候
　依之壱人も不及異儀下知に随ひ侍八十余騎
　上候五百余人出申候扨新兵衛士卒を引具し
　城下より十六七町出離れ外平と申処に而皆
　馬ゟ下り立備候得は三町程先ほかく？の尾と
　申丸山之下に竹之先に角取残を附たる予？松
　之すき間より四五本見に申候扨は敵出張候
　よと見候処に其中ゟ四五人麾を振走来是は
　木場之大庄屋喜右衛門と申者に而御座候日

　来之御忍を存し妻子共を捨御味方に参候一
　揆は安徳村深江境瀬野村之立屋敷に集り御
　勢を待請申候間是え御寄せ候得と申候新兵
　衛出向ひ能申て参候則案内仕れと申付一町
　余先へ立一面に押行申候新兵衛申候は如何
　にも静に押候得弓手安徳村之松原繁には何
　様伏者可有之味方小勢に候間只一筋に懸り
　勝負致せ馬上無用候と下知致し候新兵衛は
　牛の角之大立物其外は皆具足を着したる斗
　に而立物指物なし拙者義竹を切指物に致し

限り心変わりしてしまった上に、新兵衛の普段からの振る舞い、特に今度の万事の采配に非の打ちどころがないため、皆々が新兵衛に心を寄せ申した。これにより一人も異議を唱える者はおらず、下知に従い、侍八十余騎、足軽五百余人が出陣申した。さて新兵衛は士卒を引き連れ、城下より十六、七町離れた外平という所で皆馬から下りて陣を整えたところ、三町程先のぼかく（？）の尾という丸山の下に、竹の先に鹿の角の削り残しを付けたような松の隙間より四、五本見えた。さては敵が出張しているなと見ていたところ、その中から四、五人が旗を振って走り来た。これは木場の大庄屋喜右衛門という者であった。

【左丁】
日頃の御恩を思い、妻子共を捨てて御味方に参った。一揆勢は安徳村と深江の境の瀬野村の館に集まって御勢を待ち受け申している。ここへ御寄せくださいと申した。新兵衛は「よく申して参った。では案内をせよ」と申し付け、一町余り先に立たせて一面に押し進んだ。新兵衛が申すには「いかにも静かに押し寄せよ。弓手（左手）の安徳村の松原は茂っているので、きっと伏兵がいるであろう。味方は小勢であるから、ただ一筋に懸かって勝負をつけよ。馬上は無用である」と下知した。新兵衛は牛の角の大きな立物を付け、その他は皆具足を着けただけで立物・指物はなし。私は竹を切って指物にした。

Having changed their hearts completely, and because Shinbei's usual conduct and especially his flawless command of all affairs this time left no room for criticism, everyone came to support Shinbei. Consequently, not a single person raised any objection, and following his orders, over eighty mounted samurai and over five hundred foot soldiers set out. Now, Shinbei led his troops about sixteen or seventeen chō away from the castle town to a place called Sotohira, where they all dismounted and formed their battle formation. About three chō ahead, they could see four or five pine trees through the gaps at the base of a round hill called Bokaku-no-o, with what looked like deer antler shavings attached to bamboo tips. "So the enemy has taken position," they observed, when four or five men came running toward them waving flags. This was a man called Kiemon, the head village official of Koba.

"Remembering your daily benevolence, I have abandoned my wife and children to join your side. The rebels have gathered at the manor house in Seno village on the border between Antoku village and Fukae, waiting for your forces. Please advance there," he said. Shinbei replied, "You have done well to come and inform us. Now guide us," and had him lead about one chō ahead as they advanced in formation. Shinbei ordered: "Advance very quietly. The pine grove of Antoku village on our left flank is thick, so there are surely ambush troops there. Since our forces are small, simply charge straight ahead and settle the battle. Dismount from horses." Shinbei wore a large ornament shaped like ox horns, while the others wore only armor without any ornaments or banners. I made a banner from cut bamboo.
