[Right page] A man named Kitamura Sakuzaemon said, "I shall come to assist you," and ran across a distance of about fifty ken, but by then we four had already left the house. However, over a thousand enemy forces had deployed, hiding their numbers in hollowed areas and concealing troops in various places within the forest. They pressed forward and waited for our forces. When the arrow-shooting distance became about thirty ken, they suddenly raised their banners, climbed to a slightly elevated position, and began firing their muskets in unison from a kneeling position. Our forces, caught off guard, lay flat against the ground in the field. The four of us, seeing this, pushed through the thicket and ran toward the scene. Then five or six enemies attacked from the side from behind the thicket. Since we had fallen behind our spear-bearers, all four of us engaged with our swords, [Left page] cutting down one enemy each on either side. Meanwhile, our main force engaged with spears in fierce combat, killing thirteen enemies. We also had some wounded and dead on our side. When the four of us rejoined our main force, the enemy had already begun to flee, so we pursued them together with our forces and killed four or five more. Besides these, there were very many others killed here and there along the roadside, said to be of the same group. Regarding the events of that time, I heard later that Shinbei, while lying flat in the field, gave orders to the enemy saying "Don't let them reload their gunpowder! Charge here!" and engaged them accordingly. Now, we pursued the fleeing enemy for over eight chō and drove them into Fukae old castle. In that manor, Masuda Shirō, the general leader of the uprising, had barricaded himself, and along the road there were abatis...
