　同名小平次并町人無杢左衛門以上拾八人に而
　御座候伊藤半右衛門は同心頭に而御座候得
　共組足軽は皆江戸に罷在候片山孫大夫木村
　弥平次両人は右ゟ此所之番仕居申候孫大夫
　其頃八十歳に成申候爰に而一番鑓仕弐人突
　臥鑓ゆかみ候を押直しなから先手田中筑後
　守内に於て河渡之時先陣致し候得共身埋れ
　候故不申出候つるか又今日も一番鑓仕候と
　申候弥平次は暫防戦候か敵に鑓を被取鑓手
　共負申候打物業には叶間敷と存鑓坏取に参

　其方は鑓を被取引取候哉　取返さんに名乗

　非〱与申て矢倉へ遣申候か敵はまた引退さ
　る中に追付又門へ来り矢倉には何共不被居
　候能死処に而候間死候半と申候き敵引て後
　新兵衛扨々能被持堅候旁之働比類も無之候
　扨搦手に塩塚加左衛門成瀬源右衛門只両人

同名小平次並びに町人無杢左衛門、以上十八人でございました。伊藤半右衛門は同心頭でございましたが、組の足軽は皆江戸に行っておりました。片山孫大夫、木村弥平次の両人は以前からこの場所の番をしておりました。孫大夫はその頃八十歳になっておりましたが、ここで一番槍を務め、二人を突き伏せ、槍が血で汚れたのを押し直しながら、先手田中筑後守の配下として河渡りの時に先陣を務めましたが、身分が埋もれているので申し出なかったが、また今日も一番槍を務めたと申しました。弥平次はしばらく防戦しましたが、敵に槍を取られ、槍を手にした者たちも負傷したので、打物での戦いでは敵わないと思い、槍を奪い返しに行こうと

したでしょうか、途中から引き取りました。庄七が弥平次に向かって申すには「そなたは槍を取られて引き取ったのか。取り返さん」と名乗りをかけて敵の槍を取りました。その日、胸を横に鉄砲で撃ち抜かれましたが、それでも引き取らなかったので、残る者たちが「是非とも」と言って矢倉へ送りました。敵はまた引き退いている間に追いつき、また門へ来て、矢倉には何ともいられない、良い死に場所であるから死のうかと申しました。敵が引いた後、新兵衛は「さてさて良く守り堅められた。皆の働きぶりは比類もない」と言いました。さて搦手には塩塚加左衛門、成瀬源右衛門のただ両人がいるだけなので、私ども兄弟がそちらへ参ろうと申しました。

Magodayū was about eighty years old at that time, but here he performed the ichiban-yari (first spear attack), struck down two men, and while wiping the blood from his spear, he had served in the vanguard during a river crossing under Tanaka Chikugo-no-kami's advance guard, but because his status was obscured he had not reported it, yet today too he performed the first spear attack. That day he was shot straight through the chest with a gun, but still did not withdraw, so the remaining men said "By all means!" and sent him to the watchtower. While the enemy was retreating, they caught up and came to the gate again, saying that since there was nothing to be done in the watchtower, and it was a good place to die, perhaps they should die there. After the enemy withdrew, Shinbei said: "Indeed, you have defended well. Everyone's performance was incomparable." Now, at the rear attack point (搦手), there were only two men - Shiotsuka Kazaemon and Naruse Gen'emon - so I said that we brothers should go there.
